Indian Students Win 4 Gold, 1 Silver at International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad - Details Here
The Indian team secured four gold medals and one silver medal at the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). The event took place in Hanoi, Vietnam, from September 25 to October 5.
All the five Indian students won medals. Pranjal Dixit of Hyderabad, Sumant Gupta of Delhi, Akshat Srivastava of Gurugram and Arnav Sehrawat of Faridabad won gold medals. Harshil Amitkumar Patel of Vadodara won a silver medal.
With four gold medals, India is joint third in the medal table along with Vietnam. Iran and South Korea won five gold medals each. A total of 307 students from 64 countries participated in this IOAA. This event has the distinction of being the largest IOAA till date with regard to participating countries and number of students.
As per the information provided by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), India has been taking part in Astronomy Olympiads since 1999. Till date, 49% Indian participants have won gold medals, 35% won silver and 13% won bronze.
This performance is particularly impressive in the recent times. In the last five years, 64% Indian participants have won gold medals and 36% won silver medals.
Following the conclusion of IOAA, all the five senior level International Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy are also over for the year.
India Wins Gold or Silver in All Five Senior Science Olympiads
This year's performance is another landmark in the participation of Indian students in international science Olympiads, as for the first time since India started taking part in these international Olympiads in 1989, all Indian students who competed in the five senior level Olympiads have won either a gold or silver medal.
In total, 24 Indian students have participated in the five Olympiads in this year. Out of them, 16 students won gold medals while eight won silver medals.
The IOAA performance came on top of this success, where all the five Indian students secured medals in Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad.
IOAA 2025: Theory, Observation and Data Analysis
The IOAA competition included three major components: theory, observation and data analysis.
| Component | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Theory | 50% |
| Observation | 25% |
| Data Analysis | 25% |
The competition tested students across these areas as part of the international Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad.
Indian Team and Mentors at IOAA
The Indian team had Prof Bhaswati Mookerjea from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, and Prof Sanved Kolekar from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, as their accompaniments.
Also present at the event was Prof Aniket Sule from HBCSE-TIFR as the present president of IOAA.
The winning of four gold medals and one silver medal by the Indian team at IOAA has further added to the laurels won by the nation in various other science Olympiads.
