The new rule allowing three consecutive attempts for JEE Advanced is expected to change IIT admissions. While it gives students more chances, it also raises questions about its effect on competition, cut-offs, and preparation strategies.
A Big Help for Rural Students
An IIT Madras student explained how this policy helps rural students with fewer resources. “I only learned about JEE in Class 12. I didn’t have the tools or coaching that city students get. An extra attempt would’ve given me more time to prepare and compete better,” he said. This policy helps students balance board exams and JEE preparation more easily.

Tougher Competition for First-Timers
An NIT professor shared concerns about rising competition. First-time students may now face better-prepared droppers. “Students with extra time to study might make it harder for fresh candidates,” he explained. Authorities might need to adjust the exam format to make it fairer for everyone.

What Students Think
Many students feel relieved by the extra chance, but some worry about staying motivated. A second-time aspirant said, “It’s good to know I have another try, but preparing for longer is stressful.” Experts believe three attempts strike a balance, but the extra time may add pressure to perform better.

Impact on Cut-Offs and Coaching
With more attempts, cut-off scores may go up as students improve their preparation. Sunitha Nambiar, CEO of Manav Rachna International Schools, said, “Students who get long-term coaching will likely perform better.” However, this might create a gap between students who can afford coaching and those who can’t.

Stress Levels: Higher or Lower?
While students get more time to prepare, it could also mean more stress. Preparing for three years might feel overwhelming. A professor from IIT Hyderabad said, “Doing well in these exams takes hard work, but thriving at IIT requires curiosity and an open mind.”
Final Thoughts
The policy gives students more chances and makes IIT admissions fairer. But to ensure its success, resources like affordable coaching and financial aid need to improve. Without these, students from weaker backgrounds may struggle to compete.
It’s still unclear if students who already used two attempts can try again in 2025. Authorities need to provide clarity on this soon.
