JoSAA 2023 Counselling : Discontinuation of Branch Upgrade Option for Students at IIT Bombay and Other Top IITs, NITs
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, along with several other renowned IITs and National Institutes of Technology (NITs), have recently made the decision to discontinue the branch upgrade option for students. Reports indicate that IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Jammu are among the institutions closing this avenue for students to change their branches.
This move extends beyond the IITs, as approximately 12 NITs have also eliminated the branch upgrade option. Notable institutions such as NIT Delhi, Tiruchi, Warangal, Suratkal, Jaipur, Rourkela, Calicut, Kurukshetra, Jamshedpur, Surat, Pondicherry, and Nagaland have all decided to discontinue this feature for students.
The motivation behind IIT Bombay's decision to discontinue the branch upgrade option stems from a desire to alleviate stress on first-year students. The institute acknowledges that the pressure to attain higher grades in order to qualify for a branch change has been burdensome for students. Consequently, IIT Bombay has chosen to eliminate this system altogether.
Amit Ahuja, a Career Counselling Expert from ALLEN Career Institute, has shared insights into the widespread discontinuation of this option among various IITs and NITs. Ahuja reveals that after assessing the performance of first-year students within their respective institutions, many colleges have chosen to discontinue the branch upgrade option.
Ahuja further explains that it has been a common practice for students to initially enroll in a relatively lower branch and then aim to transfer to their desired core branches within IITs and NITs. Typically, students achieve excellent grades in the initial branch to bolster their chances of transferring. However, with the recent closure of this option, students must now prioritize their preferred branches from the outset.
