A new report from NCERT’s PARAKH team has highlighted big differences in the difficulty of Class 10 and 12 board exams across India. The report looked at English and Math papers from 17 school boards and found that some states have much tougher exams than others.
States with the Toughest Board Exams
According to the PARAKH report, these states have the hardest board exams:
S. No. | Name of the Board | Percentage of Hard Questions |
1 | Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) | 66.60% |
2 | Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) | 53.57% |
3 | Goa Board | 44.66% |
4 | Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education (CGBSE) | 44.44% |
5 | West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) | 33.33% |
Tripura has the highest percentage of 'hard' questions, followed by Maharashtra, Goa, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. These states often give students challenging questions that require a deep understanding of the subjects.
How Questions Are Categorized
The report also breaks down the difficulty of questions:
Board | Percentage of Easy Questions | Percentage of Medium Questions | Percentage of Hard Questions |
Chhattisgarh | 47.62% | 52.38% | 0% |
Goa | 0% | 55.34% | 44.66% |
Maharashtra | 33.33% | 33.33% | 33.33% |
Chhattisgarh’s exams had many ‘easy’ questions, while Goa’s exams only had ‘hard’ and ‘medium’ questions. Maharashtra’s exams had a mix of ‘easy,’ ‘medium,’ and ‘hard’ questions.
What Do Easy, Medium, and Hard Questions Mean?
Here’s what the report says about the different types of questions:
- Easy Questions: These are designed for most students to get right. They test basic knowledge.
- Medium Questions: These require a bit more understanding. Many students can answer these, but not as many as the easy questions.
- Hard Questions: These are tough and only a few students can answer them. They test advanced thinking and problem-solving skills.
How Boards Test Memory vs. Understanding
The report also looked at whether questions focus more on rote memory or understanding:
Name of the Board | Focus | Percentage |
Board of Secondary Education Haryana (HBSE/BSEH) | Rote Memory | 64.71% |
Goa Board | Rote Memory | 57.89% |
Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education | Rote Memory | 53.13% |
Odisha Board | Rote Memory | 50.77% |
Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad | Understanding | 87.76% |
Nagaland Board of Secondary Education | Understanding | 73.00% |
Tripura Board of Secondary Education | Understanding | 61.70% |
Kerala Board of Public Examination | Understanding | 61.54% |
Concerns and Suggestions
The PARAKH report has raised concerns about the differences in exam difficulty. While tougher exams might find top students, they could also affect students’ mental health and learning experience. Experts suggest looking at how exams are set up and creating a fairer system to help students do their best while maintaining high academic standards.
