Selection Process For The NDA Examination

There are two stages involved in the selection process for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy. One is the written examination, and the other is the SSB interview. We have given the details about both of them below.

  • Every subject paper will include objective-type multiple-choice questions. The Maths question paper and part ‘B’ of the General Ability Test will be available in English as well as Hindi. 

  • You have to write the answers with your own hands as you will not be allowed scribe help under any circumstances. 

  • The Union Public Service Commission has the freedom to fix the qualifying marks for any or all subjects of the exam. 

  • You will not be permitted to use a calculator or a mathematical or logarithmic table for answering the questions.

Eligibility Criteria For The NDA Examination

There are a variety of components that determine your eligibility for this examination. Our experts have gathered this information from official sources, and you can refer to the details below. 

Nationality

  • You will be able to take this exam as an Indian citizen or a subject of Nepal. 

  • You will also be able to apply if you are of Indian origin but have migrated from East African Countries of Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Zaire, the United Republic of Tanzania, and Ethiopia, or Vietnam; and Pakistan, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Your intention should be to settle permanently in India. 

Marital Status, Age Limit, and Sex

  • Only unmarried male and female candidates can apply for the NDA examination. 

  • For age, you must be born between 1st July 2007 and 1st July 2010 for NDA I and between 1st January 2008 and 1st January 2011 for NDA II. Your date of birth will be accepted by the Commission as per your: 

    • Matriculation

    • Secondary School Leaving Certificate

    • A certificate equivalent to Matriculation that is recognized by an Indian University

    • Extract from a Register of Matriculates, which is maintained by a University. 

  • You have to undertake that you are not going to marry until the completion of your training. If you get married during the exam period, then you will not be selected for the training. In case you marry during the training, then you will be discharged and have to refund all the expenditure that is incurred on you by the government. 

Educational Qualifications

  • NDA Army Wing: 12th class pass as per the school education pattern for 10+2. An equivalent exam conducted by the State education board or university is also valid. 

  • NDA Air Force and Naval Wing: INA 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme: 12th class pass with Physics, Chemistry, and Maths subjects. 

  • You can also apply if you are still appearing in the class 12th. 

  • If you qualify for the SSB interview but are not able to submit your original Matriculation or 10+2 certificate at that time, then you have to forward self-attested photocopies by 10th December 2026 to:

    • Directorate General of Recruiting, Army Headquarters, West Block III, R.K. Puram, New Delhi-110066.

Analytical Geometry of Two and Three Dimensions 

Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate system. Distance formula. Equation of a line in various forms. Angle between two lines. Standard forms of parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola. Eccentricity and axis of a conic. Point in a three-dimensional space, distance between two points. Direction Cosines and direction ratios. Angle between two lines and angle between two planes. Differential Calculus

Concept of a real-valued function–domain, range and graph of a function. Composite functions, one-to-one, onto, and inverse functions. Notion of limit, Standard limits- examples. Continuity of functions- examples, algebraic operations on continuous functions. 

Integral Calculus

Integration as inverse of differentiation, integration by substitution and by parts, standard integrals involving algebraic expressions, trigonometric, exponential and hyperbolic functions.

Differential Equations 

Definition of order and degree of a differential equation, formation of a differential equation by examples. General and particular solutions of differential equations. Application in problems of growth and decay.

Vector Algebra 

Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and direction of a vector. Unit and null vectors, addition of vectors, scalar multiplication of a vector, scalar product or dot product of two vectors. Vector product or cross product of two vectors. 

Statistics 

Classification of data, Frequency distribution, cumulative frequency distribution. Graphical representation- Histogram, Pie Chart, frequency polygon. Measures of Central tendency- Mean, median, and mode. Variance and standard deviation- determination and comparison. Correlation and regression.

Probability 

Random experiment, outcomes and associated sample space, events, mutually exclusive and exhaustive events, impossible and certain events. Union and Intersection of Events. Complementary, elementary, and composite events. Definition of probability- classical and statistical. Elementary theorems on probability. Conditional probability, Bayes’ theorem.

PAPER 2: GENERAL ABILITY TEST (600 marks)

Preparation and Properties of Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon dioxide, Oxidation and Reduction. Acids, bases, and salts. Carbon- different forms. Fertilizers- Natural and Artificial. Materials used in the preparation of substances like Soap, Glass, Ink, Paper, Cement, Paints, Safety Matches, and gunpowder. Elementary ideas about the structure of the Atom, Atomic Equivalent and Molecular Weights, Valency. 

General Science (10% weightage)

Difference between the living and non-living. Basis of Life- Cells, Protoplasms and Tissues. Growth and Reproduction in Plants and Animals. Elementary knowledge of the Human Body and its important organs. Common Epidemics, their causes and prevention. Food- Source of Energy for man. Constituents of food, Balanced Diet. The Solar System- Meteors and Comets, Eclipses. Achievements of Eminent Scientists.

History, the Freedom Movement, etc. (20% weightage)

A broad survey of Indian History, with emphasis on Culture and Civilisation. Freedom Movement in India. Elementary study of Indian Constitution and Administration. Elementary knowledge of Five Year Plans of India. Panchayati Raj, Co-operatives and Community Development. Bhoodan, Sarvodaya, National Integration and Welfare State, Basic Teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Forces shaping the modern world; Renaissance, Exploration and Discovery; War of American Independence. French Revolution, Industrial Revolution, and Russian Revolution. Impact of Science and Technology on Society. Concept of one World, United Nations, Panchsheel, Democracy, Socialism and Communism. Geography (20% weightage)

The Earth, its shape and size. Latitudes and Longitudes, Concept of time. International Date Line. Movements of Earth and their effects. Origin of Earth. Rocks and their classification; Weathering- Mechanical and Chemical, Earthquakes and Volcanoes. Ocean Currents and Tides. Atmosphere and its composition; Temperature and Atmospheric Pressure, Planetary Winds, Cyclones and Anticyclones; Humidity; Condensation and Precipitation; Types of Climate, Major Natural regions of the World. Regional Geography of India- Climate, Natural vegetation. Mineral and Power resources; location and distribution of agricultural and Industrial activities. Important Sea ports and main sea, land and air routes of India. Main items of Imports and Exports of India. 

Current Events (10% weightage)

Knowledge of Important events that have happened in India in recent years. Current important world events. Prominent personalities- both Indian and International, including those connected with cultural activities and sports.

INTELLIGENCE AND PERSONALITY TEST

Stage I and Stage II are the two stages of the SSB selection process. You are only allowed to participate in Stage II if you pass Stage I. The specifics are:

Stage I comprises the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on a combination of performance in the OIR Test and the PP&DT.

B

Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests, and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days. The details of these tests are given on the website www.joinindianarmy.nic.in

  • The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors, viz. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There is no separate weightage for each test. The marks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance of the candidate holistically in all the tests. In addition, marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the Candidate in the three techniques and the decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.
  • The various tests of IO, GTO and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/absence of Officer Like Qualities and their trainability in a candidate. Accordingly, candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.
