The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced significant changes regarding the Chartered Accountants (CA) Final examination. This new system will come into effect starting with the CA Final examination in May 2026. This will mark the first session under the format of conducting the examination twice a year.

Reducing the frequency of examination attempts is expected to lead to better preparation, more effective revision, and greater stability in the examination schedule.

In its official notice, the ICAI stated: "Currently, the Chartered Accountants Final examinations are being conducted three times a year—specifically in the months of January, May, and September.

Taking into account the feedback received from stakeholders, the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has decided that, commencing with the May 2026 Chartered Accountants examination and thereafter, the CA Final examinations will be conducted twice a year—in the months of May and November."

What Will Be the Impact on CA Students?

This new schedule is likely to have a direct impact on hundreds of thousands of CA aspirants across the country. While, on one hand, the reduction in the number of attempts may limit opportunities for some candidates, on the other hand, it is also expected to encourage the adoption of more effective preparation strategies.

Experts believe that increasing the interval between attempts will offer the following benefits to students:

➤ Enhanced clarity of concepts and a greater focus on in-depth study.

➤ The ability to better balance their exam preparation with their articleship and professional responsibilities.

➤ A reduction in the mental strain associated with repeated exam attempts, thereby minimizing exam-related fatigue.

➤ Students will also need to plan their attempts more strategically, as missing an opportunity could result in a significantly longer waiting period.

CA Intermediate Exam 2026 Schedule Revised

The schedule for the Chartered Accountants Intermediate Examination has been revised. According to the updated schedule, the examinations originally slated for May 2026 will now commence on May 5th, rather than May 3rd. Under the new timetable, Group-I examinations are scheduled to be held on May 5th, 7th, and 9th, while Group-II examinations have been scheduled for May 11th, 13th, and 15th.

No changes have been made to the examination dates for other categories, such as the Foundation and Final examinations.
