CBSE will introduce two levels—Standard and Advanced—for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10, starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This decision is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to reduce student stress and offer flexible learning options. Right now, only Mathematics is available in two levels—Standard and Basic—since the 2019-20 session.

The plan is still being finalized and needs approval from CBSE’s governing body. The board is deciding if students at the advanced level will get different textbooks, extra study material, or just separate question papers. Students will also have a chance to switch between levels within a given time.

This change will help students who are good at Science and Social Science prepare better for Class 11. The NCERT will provide new textbooks based on the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. Textbooks for Classes 4, 5, 7, and 8 will be ready by the 2025-26 session, and more will come by January 2026.

CBSE’s two-level system in Mathematics has been successful. In 2023-24, over 15.88 lakh students chose Mathematics Standard, while 6.79 lakh took the Basic level. Expanding this system to Science and Social Science will give students more options and help them prepare well for future studies.
