GSEB Gujarat Adopts New Exam Format for Class 9 & 11 Question Papers

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) has made changes to the exam pattern for Class 9 and Class 11. These updates match the exam structure for GSEB Class 10 and Class 12 exams in 2025. The new pattern will have 70% descriptive and 30% objective questions.
The goal of this change is to make exam patterns the same across different classes, helping students as they move from Class 9 to Class 10 and Class 11 to Class 12. The new format will start from the 2024-2025 academic year. This will affect around 15 lakh students. The board says this will help reduce failure rates by making the exams easier to understand.
With the new format, objective questions have increased from 20% to 30%, while the descriptive questions will now make up 70%. Students will be given five questions to choose from and can answer any two or three, instead of just two like before.
This updated exam pattern applies to all streams: science, commerce, and general.
For Class 11, the board has updated the syllabus and sample question papers for important subjects. These include Gujarati, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, economics, statistics, business administration, psychology, sociology, history, geography, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.
However, for Class 9, six subjects—computer studies, music, yoga, health and physical education, agriculture, animal husbandry, dairy science, and home science—will keep their old exam formats. In Class 11, subjects like computer studies, music, yoga, and health and physical education will also follow the old format.
