The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced new tie-breaking guidelines for JEE Main 2025. According to the revised rules, age criteria and application numbers will no longer be used to resolve ties between candidates. If all other criteria fail to break the tie, candidates will now be awarded the same rank.
Tie-Breaking Rules for JEE Main 2025 Key Points
In case candidates score the same Total NTA score, the following criteria will be used in sequence to assign ranks:
1. Removal of age and application number criteria: Unlike previous years, now the age and application number of candidates will not be considered while resolving a tie.
2. New performance-based measures: The revised tie-breaking rules focus only on the exam performance of the candidates. The criteria include:
- Higher NTA score in Mathematics: Candidates with higher scores in Mathematics will be ranked higher.
- Higher NTA score in Physics: If the Mathematics marks are equal, then Physics marks will be considered next.
- Higher NTA score in Chemistry: If the marks in both Mathematics and Physics are equal, then Chemistry marks will be evaluated.
- Low ratio of Incorrect to Correct answers across subjects: The overall accuracy of the candidates will be assessed by calculating the ratio of correct to incorrect answers across subjects.
- Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Mathematics: If the tie persists, then the ratio in Mathematics will be evaluated.
- Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Physics: The same ratio will be considered in Physics as well.
- Lower Ratio of Incorrect to Correct Answers in Chemistry: Finally, the ratio in Chemistry will be considered.
3. Equal rank in case of persistent tie: If a tie persists after all criteria are applied, candidates will be given equal rank.
Significance of changes in Tie-Breaking Policy
The updated tie-breaking policy aims to create a more equitable and merit-based ranking system, ensuring that candidates are evaluated only on the basis of their performance in the exam. This change is expected to result in a more fair assessment of candidates' abilities and reduce any potential bias.
