The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has decided to stop giving grace marks to students. This decision came after criticism and orders from the Chief Minister. The School Education and Literacy Department will no longer use the grace marks policy for Class 10. Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced this change on October 9, 2024.
Before this, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked the department to end grace marks, saying they hurt the quality of education and reduce competition among students.
The controversy began when KSEAB increased grace marks from 10% to 20% after only 54% of students passed the SSLC exam. This pass rate rose to 74% because of the grace marks. The original 10% grace marks were introduced to support students affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This new decision focuses on improving the quality of education and encouraging students to compete. Some people worry that this change might lead to more cheating during exams, but experts believe that the right measures can help prevent that.
