NEET, JEE 2026 Admission Rules May Change: Board Exams to Get 50% Weightage
As per the reports, board examination scores will soon carry 50 per cent weightage in the admissions which are presently based mostly on entrance tests such as NEET and JEE.
The possibility of doing so is under consideration with an aim to minimize the stakes involved in any exam, whether it may be the entrance tests for medical and engineering admissions or board exams.
Why has such a move come about?
The move is being brought about because there have been a lot of irregularities involving the examinations, including paper leaks, and errors in the evaluation process.
Changes being planned.
“Weighing 50 per cent marks of board examinations in admission/merit, bringing entrance test in tune with curriculum taught in school to minimize dependence on coaching centres, multiple attempts and moving gradually towards adaptive, on demand computer-based tests,” sources said.
They further added that this proposal has come up during the discussions about a larger reform package being discussed regarding the overhaul of India’s examination system. There have been controversies related to paper leaks, evaluation controversies and other malpractices associated with competitive exams have made people realize the need to have an examination process which is reliable and more credible.
The officials have decided to bring about such changes which will ensure less stake in a single entrance exam and will emphasize the performance of the students all through their school.
Current status
At present, the medical and engineering admissions are done on the basis of the entrance test and it is required for the candidates to qualify the percentage in board exams to become eligible for the entrance test.
The reforms under consideration have been proposed by the nine-member committee established by the Ministry of Education last year to consider students' dependence on coaching, the existence of 'dummy schools' and unfairness of the entrance test.
This reform will make some modifications to the system of admissions into professional courses. As per the new system, apart from the scores obtained in the entrance tests such as NEET and JEE, the students' performance in Class 12 board examinations will also be taken into account. Board exam marks will be counted for 50 per cent of the total score along with entrance test scores.
The final report is expected to be submitted by the committee soon to the government.
