NEET UG 2026 MBBS Seat Matrix (Out): 9,911 Seats Added, 25 New Medical Colleges Approved
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has published the official seat matrix for the MBBS course for the academic year 2026-27. As per the latest information, there will be 1,36,939 seats for MBBS in 823 medical colleges in India.
Out of all the seats, 1,27,028 seats have been approved earlier, while NMC has added 9,911 new MBBS seats this year.
Moreover, NMC has approved 25 new medical colleges, and these new colleges will provide 2,400 more MBBS seats.
This seat matrix will assist the candidates in knowing about the total number of seats available prior to starting the NEET UG 2026 counselling procedure.

MBBS Seats Increase in Government and Private Colleges
The number of MBBS seats has increased in both government and private medical colleges.

Government Medical Colleges: 2,111 New MBBS Seats Added
India currently has 441 government medical colleges.
These colleges previously offered 61,185 MBBS seats. The NMC has now added 2,111 seats, taking the total number of government MBBS seats to 63,296.
Private Medical Colleges: 7,800 New MBBS Seats Added
India currently has 382 private medical colleges.
These colleges had 65,843 approved MBBS seats. After the addition of 7,800 seats, the total number of private MBBS seats has increased to 73,643.
Seven New Government Medical Colleges Approved
Seven more government medical colleges have been sanctioned by the NMC for the 2026-27 session, making a total of 400 MBBS seats available.

Five new government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh have been sanctioned, and each college will have 50 MBBS seats.
18 New Private Medical Colleges Approved
In addition to this, the NMC has also sanctioned 18 new private medical colleges for the year 2026-27. Altogether, the above-discussed colleges will provide 2,000 MBBS seats.

NMC Releases MBBS Seat Matrix for 2026-27
The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), which works under the NMC, has issued the official MBBS seat details for the 2026-27 academic year.
As per the seat matrix, admission will be offered to 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 government and private medical colleges in India.
The number of previously approved MBBS seats is 1,27,028. After adding 9,911 new seats, the total number has increased to 1,36,939.
The NMC has made it clear that medical colleges can admit students only against the seats approved by the commission. Colleges won’t be allowed to admit students beyond their sanctioned intake.
The seat matrix includes approvals granted up to July 13, 2026.
According to MARB, in case there is any change in the intake of the medical colleges in the future, then it would be informed in a new order. This new seat matrix would also be uploaded on the website of the NMC.
New Medical Colleges Must Complete Formalities Within Seven Days
Private medical colleges approved to begin operations in the 2026-27 academic session must submit an Electronic Bank Guarantee, or E-BG, within seven days.
On completion of all formalities, MARB shall grant a letter of permission known as LoP to those colleges which fulfill all the requirements.
Only those colleges who comply with all formalities can get admission for students.

The increased MBBS seats would be helpful for candidates aspiring for admission in NEET UG 2026 counselling.
With 9,911 extra MBBS seats, students can get admission opportunities in government as well as private medical colleges. But, candidates would get a seat depending on his or her NEET UG rank, category, choice of counseling and seats reservation rules.
It is suggested to all candidates that they should properly refer the official seat matrix before choosing colleges at the time of counseling.
