NEET UG 2026 Seat Matrix Revised: Total Seats Cross 1.4 Lakh

The latest NMC seat matrix shows a further increase compared with the earlier figures released for the 2026-27 academic year.

The previous NMC seat matrix listed 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 medical colleges. The revised total of 1,40,214 seats is therefore 3,275 seats higher than the earlier figure.

The increase gives NEET UG 2026 candidates more seats to consider during the counselling process. However, seat availability will still depend on the college, state, category and other applicable admission conditions.

Private Medical Colleges See Major Increase in MBBS Seats

Earlier NMC data had already shown a significant increase in MBBS seats in private medical colleges.

According to the earlier figures, private medical institutions had around 73,643 MBBS seats, while government medical colleges had more than 63,000 seats.

The latest revised matrix further increases the private-sector intake to 76,243 seats. This makes private colleges responsible for more than half of the total MBBS seats available in the updated matrix.

NMC Asks Medical Colleges to Verify Seat Matrix Details

The NMC has also advised all medical colleges to carefully check the details mentioned for their respective institutions in the revised seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year.

Colleges have been asked to report any discrepancy or missing information to the concerned NMC authority for examination and further action.

This verification is important before the start of the counselling process, as the final seat availability will directly affect candidates participating in NEET UG Counselling 2026.

NEET UG Counselling 2026: Why Revised Seat Matrix Matters

The number of seats can vary based on:

  • Medical college
  • State
  • Category
  • Government or private institution
  • NMC-approved intake

Candidates should therefore refer to the latest seat matrix instead of relying on older seat data while preparing their counselling choices.
