National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are autonomous technical institutes run by the Government of India. There are a total of 31 NITs in India offering undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and doctoral programmes in engineering, science, management and architecture.

Admission to BTech in these institutes is done through JEE Main rank and JoSAA counselling, while admission to MTech is done through GATE score and CCMT counselling.

Top NITs and their NIRF 2025 Ranking

NIT Tiruchirappalli is ranked 9th in the NIRF Engineering Ranking of 2024, which is the top NIT in India. Apart from this, NIT Karnataka, Rourkela, Warangal and Calicut are also among the prominent institutes. A total of 20 NITs are ranked in the top 100.
