Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct board exams twice a year. Students who will be appearing for CBSE Class 10, and 12 exams that session will be among the first to experience the format of board exams twice a year. However, CBSE's twice a year board examination system will not be mandatory for students.

“The aim of this system is to reduce the stress on students who are afraid of missing even a single opportunity. If a candidate is ready and is satisfied with the marks obtained in one set of exams, he or she can choose not to appear in the next exam,” officials said, as reported by Times of India.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said in a TOI interview that the two-yearly board system will be introduced from the 2024-2025 academic year. "This means it will be adopted from the 2025 board exams for classes X and XII. It will be effective for current class IX and XI students," Pradhan told TOI.

According to officials, the multiple board exam system is being introduced to reduce the stress on students who are afraid of missing even a single opportunity. If a candidate is ready and satisfied with the score of one of the exam sets, he/she can choose not to appear for the second exam. The new system of conducting examinations twice a year will not be mandatory for class 10 and 12 students.

According to media reports, the results of the best of the two exams will be used to determine the final result and merit list. The first board exams of 2025 are expected to be held in November–December 2024, while the second exams are scheduled for February–March 2025.
