The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 10 and class 12 exams saw a marginal drop in the number of high-scoring students compared to last year, with students scoring between 90% and 95% marks. Girls outshone boys once again this year. The board released the results of over 38 lakh students on Tuesday, with the overall pass percentage improving marginally in both classes.
For class 12, the overall pass percentage rose to 88.39% from 87.98% last year. In class 10, the figure rose slightly to 93.66% from 93.60% in 2024. Girls continued their lead, outperforming boys by a considerable margin: 5.94 percentage points in class 12 and 2.37 in class 10.
In a notable change, all transgender students who appeared for the Class 12 exams this year passed - up from a 50% pass rate in 2024. Their pass rate in Class 10 also rose to 95% from 91.3% last year. However, the board did not reveal how many transgender candidates took the exam.
The number of students scoring in the top bracket saw a marginal drop. In Class 12, 1,11,544 students scored above 90% and 24,867 crossed the 95% mark. Both numbers reflect a marginal drop from 2024, when 1.16 lakh students scored above 90% and 24,068 scored above 95%. Of them, 290 children with special needs (CSWN) scored above 90% while 55 crossed 95%.
Class 10 also saw a similar trend: 1.99 lakh students scored over 90% marks – down from 2.12 lakh last year – and 45,516 students scored over 95%, slightly less than the 47,000 who scored that mark in 2024. Of these, 411 were CSWN students, of whom 66 scored over 95%.
To discourage unhealthy competition, CBSE has continued its policy of not publishing merit lists or awarding first, second or third divisions based on marks.
The board exams were held for 33 days for Class 10 and 49 days for Class 12, starting on February 15. The number of students placed in the supplementary or compartment category saw a marginal rise this year, with over 1.41 lakh students in Class 10 and over 1.29 lakh students in Class 12 appearing again for one or more subjects.
Region-wise, southern and coastal cities dominated. In Class 10, Trivandrum and Vijayawada topped the chart with a pass percentage of 99.79%, while Guwahati recorded the lowest pass percentage at 84.14%. In Class 12, Vijayawada led the way with 99.60%, followed by Trivandrum at 99.32%. Prayagraj recorded the lowest pass percentage of 79.53% in Class 12.
Among the institutions, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas once again emerged with the highest success rate at both levels.
Reacting to the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared an encouraging message for students and posted on Twitter: "To those who feel a little disappointed with their marks, I want to say: One exam can never define you. Your journey is much bigger and your strength goes far beyond the mark sheet."
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also congratulated the students and their families. He wrote, "This is a moment to enjoy and cherish the fruits of hard work, dedication and perseverance."
