CBSE Starts Preparations for Next Year's Class 10 and 12 Board Exams

CBSE Starts Preparations for Next Year's Class 10 and 12 Board Exams

The CBSE has initiated the pre-exam process for the Class 10 and 12 board exams which will be held next year. The board has also floated the tender for scanning the flying slips and completing the data compilation process from them.

What Is a Flying Slip?

The flying slip consists of personal information of the candidate, including his/her name, ID number, and roll number. The selected agency shall use the ICR, OCR, and OMR scanners to scan the flying slips. After scanning, the data is put into the data files, which shall be correlated with the data in the board’s records, according to an official.

Why CBSE Is Digitising Candidate Data

A CBSE official said that this process is among the tasks carried out as a part of pre-exam activities by the Board, and it is aimed at the digitisation of a huge number of candidate data.

"The tasks which pertain to the exam are conducted in three stages - Pre-examination, actual exam and post-examination activities. This task of flying slip scanning is included in the first stage. In this, the Board compiles the candidate details and calls upon the schools to enter the details online. Previously, this was done manually by the school," the official said.

How Schools Verify Student Details

After submitting all of these details, they print out a copy and give calls to the parents and students for verification of all the details. After completing all of these verification procedures, they once again upload the details which have been corrected by them, the official added.

"They are compiling all of the details and data of those candidates who will be appearing for next year's examinations. In order to do this, they have asked that the flying slips be printed out by the vendor and then all of these details be entered in the system so that they could examine it. Digitalisation of the details before the examination is required. We cannot do it manually due to the reason that the number of candidates has become too huge."

The Scale of the Exam

Approximately 18 lakh candidates appear in class 12, while another 25-26 lakh candidates have registered themselves for the exam of class 10. “All such operations if conducted manually will be almost impossible to conduct. There is ample room for mistakes. The pre-exam activities have been completely digitalized from the last two to three years,” the official informed.

Where the Scanning Will Take Place

The assignment encompasses scanning and data finalisation at the board's regional offices at Ajmer, Prayagraj, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Delhi (East), Delhi (West), Gurugram, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Noida, Panchkula, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.

What the Selected Agency Will Do

As per the official sources, the agency selected for the assignment will scan slips bearing OMR- and ICR-based information, match the data, prepare the reports and eliminate the errors from the database.

"Input Data Preparation, Processing and Printing of Slips, including flying slip having Centre Number, Roll Number, Subject Code, Candidate's Name and Identification Number as Bar Code," the tender document says.

The agency will be provided with a contract term of two years. The agency is expected to scan each slip using an image scanner (ICR/OCR) or OMR scanner, prepare printed copies with a scanned number in each slip and make raw data file of each slip.

How Errors Will Be Fixed

The agency will also rectify any mistakes regarding the centre number, roll number, subject code, name of the candidate, and candidate’s ID. They will compile an edit list containing the invalid and/or duplicate entries and verify each of those. The data file will be modified till all errors are sorted out.

Then, the agency will compare the scanned data with the admission master given by CBSE, point out any discrepancies, and continue modifying the data file till all data matches.

“Data of candidates collected from the flying slips duly matched with the list of candidates in the proforma supplied by the Board on CD as per requirements of the board. Any discrepancy in the particulars of the candidates in the database and in the documents shall be considered as mistakes and shall be the responsibility of the agency,” reads the document.

When the Work Is Carried Out

Officials said the scanning work is usually carried out two to three times a year. It is done once for the main board exams, which are now held twice and generally run between February and June, and again for the compartment exams, usually held in July and August.

How Many Students Will Appear in 2027-28

As per the bidding papers, roughly 29.89 lakh students for class 10th and 12th would appear in the 2027-28 board examinations, across 24 zones. As per the bidding papers, the highest numbers have been listed as Delhi (East), then Noida, Prayagraj, Ludhiana, and Delhi (West).
