On August 12, 2024, the Ministry of Education released the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), now in its ninth year. The NIRF ranks Indian colleges and universities based on five main factors: Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR); Research and Professional Practices (RPC); Graduation Outcomes (GO); Outreach and Inclusivity (OI); and Perception (PER).

This year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was ranked sixth overall.

In engineering, IIT Kanpur secured the fourth spot. It was also seventh in research and fifth in innovation.

Many students aspire to study at IIT Kanpur, but admission is competitive and costly, with first-year fees ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 3 lakh. To assist students, IIT Kanpur offers a range of scholarships.

IIT Kanpur’s Scholarship Programs

Merit-cum-Means Scholarship:

This scholarship offers full tuition coverage and a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000. To keep the scholarship, students need to maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5. If the CPI drops below 6.5 but stays above 6.0, the monthly allowance will be removed. To apply, students must provide a parental income certificate. This scholarship is for students from non-SC/ST categories with an annual parental income of less than Rs 4.5 lakh.

INSPIRE Scholarship:

Students in BS programs with a rank within the top 10,000 in Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics are eligible for this scholarship. It provides Rs 30,000 per semester and a research grant of Rs 20,000. Students must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.0 to qualify.

Free Basic Mess Scholarship:

Available to SC/ST students with an annual parental income of less than Rs 4.5 lakh, this scholarship covers the basic mess bill and includes a pocket allowance.

Donor Scholarship:

129 scholarships are awarded to deserving and needy students. To qualify, students must have a CPI of 6.0 or higher and a total family income of less than Rs 6 lakh. If there are no applicants for specific donor scholarships in a given year, the amount available for the next year doubles, allowing for more awards. The scholarship may also be opened up to more students if the original criteria are not met.

Sports Scholarships:

Up to 20 sports scholarships are awarded each year, each providing Rs 1,000 per month for 9 months. These scholarships are for students who show leadership in sports and help promote and grow sporting activities on campus.
