Why Did Indian Universities Slip in QS Asia Rankings 2027?
QS attributes the fall mainly to growing competition among Asian universities. This year, 195 new universities made into the rankings, along with the performance improvement of several existing universities.
Reputation and Internationalisation were amongst the weakest categories for Indian universities. The Academic Reputation saw a deterioration at 76% of Indian universities, followed by Employer Reputation at 83%.
The international student category too witnessed deterioration. The international student indicator deteriorated at 85% of Indian universities, and the inbound and outbound exchange indicators worsened at 91% and 89% of Indian universities, respectively.
However, research productivity was amongst the stronger categories for Indian universities. Papers per Faculty was the only indicator where more Indian universities performed better than worsened. India has 27 universities in the top 50 Asian universities on this indicator, five of which are in the top 10.
India's Growing Presence in QS Asia Rankings
In spite of the drop in rankings, India’s representation has greatly increased. India currently has 325 universities in the QS Asia 2027 rankings, and 34 new universities have been added.
According to QS, India’s representation has increased from 24 universities in 2016 to 325 in 2027. Its representation in the list of top 200 universities in Asia has also increased from 17 universities to 21 universities.
From the latest ranking, it is clear that Indian universities are still growing in terms of research, but global reputation and internationalization efforts will be critical in getting better rankings in the future.
