GATE 2027 Registration Opens Today: What's New This Year

The Institute of IIT Madras has opened the online application portal for GATE 2027 from today onwards, that is August 27, 2026. As per the earlier schedule, it was planned to be opened on August 14 but has been postponed. As per the new schedule, you can apply till September 27, 2026.

DigiLocker is now mandatory

The most important development this year is the introduction of DigiLocker. Without DigiLocker registration, you cannot apply for GATE 2027.

DigiLocker is an online digital locker provided by the government where all your documents are stored. IIT Madras will directly download your details from it – your name, date of birth, mobile number, email ID, photograph, address, and verified ID card number are all auto-filled.

Though this will minimize typing mistakes, it does mean that you must make sure that all your information in the DigiLocker is correct before beginning your application. This will not only reduce the chances of rejection of your application but also save you time.

A New Paper: Robotics and Automation

IIT Madras has added a new test paper called Robotics and Automation (RA). That brings the total to 30 papers for GATE 2027.

GATE 2027 Exam Dates

The exam runs across six days in February 2027. Here's the full schedule:

Application fees by category

What you pay depends on your category and when you apply:

Unreserved candidates	Rs 2,000	Rs 2,500
Female candidates	Rs 1,000	Rs 1,500
SC/ST/PwD candidates	Rs 1,000	Rs 1,500

What happens if you miss the deadline

If the deadline of September 27 is missed, there is always a second opportunity for you. The extended period will remain open until October 5, 2026. There is an extra fee of Rs 500 along with the usual fee amount.

Mistakes made in the application form? No problem at all. The correction period starts on October 14 and ends on October 21, 2026.

Apply in the usual period of time if possible. The regular period not only saves money but also helps to resolve any issues with DigiLocker.
