IITs, IIMs See Rise in Women Students: Check Placement and Salary Trends
There has been a marked increase in the number of students studying at IITs, IIMs, and NITs. Additionally, there has also been an increase in the number of women participating. As per research by SBI, the number of such institutions rose from 59 in FY14 to 76 in FY26.
More IITs, IIMs and NITs, More Students
In 2014, there were 16 IITs and 13 IIMs in India. Since then, the number has grown to 23 IITs and 22 IIMs, besides 31 NITs.
According to SBI Research analysis based on data from NIRF, IIMs' enrollment has risen from 9,298 in 2017-18 to 18,243 in 2023-24. There is also growth in the number of students in IITs and NITs.

Women’s Participation Rises in IITs, IIMs and NITs
Women's presence has been on the rise in all the three types of institutions. The percentage of women in the IIMs has risen from 26.3% in 2017-18 to 37.7% in 2023-24.
In IITs, the presence of women rose from 8.1% to 20%, whereas in NITs, it increased from 18.4% to 21.8%.

Placements Also Increase
There has been an increase in the number of students that enroll for placements. The placement numbers for IIMs went up from 7,552 in 2015-2016 to 13,693 in 2023-24. The placements for IITs increased from 9,474 to 17,467. NITs went up from 18,492 to 28,468.

According to SBI Research, the estimated average placement rate in these institutions is about 93%. It is also seen that some students go for higher studies rather than placements directly.
Median Salary Increases at IITs, IIMs and NITs
The median salary has also risen during the period under analysis for SBI Research. In IIMs, the median salary has risen from Rs 28.5 lakh in 2015-16 to Rs 43.6 lakh in 2023-24.
In IITs, the median salary has risen from Rs 17.6 lakh to Rs 36.1 lakh, while in NIT, it has risen from Rs 10.5 lakh to Rs 20.7 lakh.

The data also shows that more students at IITs and NITs opted for higher studies in 2023-24. This means a section of graduates continued with advanced education and research instead of entering the workforce immediately.
