JEE Main 2027 Attempt Limit: Check Eligibility, Age and Rules

JEE Main 2027 Attempt Limit: Check Eligibility, Age and Rules

The JEE Main number of attempts for 2027 will be decided according to the guidelines announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin has not yet been made available. Hence, candidates should consult the official notification to ensure that they are eligible or not.

According to the JEE Main eligibility criteria in force now, eligibility depends upon the year when a candidate passes or takes the qualifying examination in Class 12 or equivalent. In case of JEE Main 2026, those candidates who had passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025 or were appearing in 2026 were considered eligible. NTA also takes into account the first year when a candidate passed the qualifying examination.

For those candidates who are going to appear for JEE Main 2027, they should check the official notification of NTA.

JEE Main 2027 Attempt Limit for General and Reserved Categories

The criteria for taking JEE Main will not change depending upon the category of the candidate. The candidates belonging to General, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD/PwBD categories have to fulfill all the criteria as per the rules made by the NTA.

Reservation can be done for the reserved category students. This does not mean that the chances of attempting JEE Main will increase.

JEE Main 2027 Attempt Limit for Droppers

Students opting for a drop after Class 12 must know that having a gap year does not necessarily lead to a fresh eligibility period for JEE Main. The eligibility criteria depend on the year of passing of the qualifying examination and eligibility norms for the specific JEE Main.

According to the JEE Main 2026 norms, candidates who had appeared in Class 12 for the first time in 2024 or 2025 and also those appearing for Class 12 in 2026 were eligible. A repeat examination does not affect the original year of passing of Class 12.

Hence, those students who plan to write JEE Main 2027 examination must find out the year in which they passed Class 12.

JEE Main 2027 vs JEE Advanced Attempts for Droppers

There is a difference between the criteria of eligibility for JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. In the case of JEE Advanced, candidates have been allowed, by tradition, to give the examination twice within two consecutive years.

JEE Main eligibility criterion is determined independently by NTA. Candidates should not make any assumptions about the number of attempts for both examinations being the same.

Preparation and Gap Certificate Rules for Droppers

A gap year in itself is not responsible for providing extra eligibility years for JEE Main. It is mandatory to furnish the necessary academic documents as asked by NTA while registering for JEE Main.

It is advised that candidates store the marksheets and respective certificates of Class 10 and Class 12. Requirements for admission documents can be different from those during JEE Main registration.

JEE Main 2027 Age Limit and Eligibility Criteria

There is no restriction regarding the upper limit of age for taking the JEE Main exam. However, the candidates should ensure that they fulfill the eligibility criteria of their year of qualifying exam Class 12.

For the 2027 JEE Main exam, the candidates should refer to the NTA Information Bulletin released officially for their eligible years of passing Class 12 exams.

It is also important to know the difference between eligibility criteria for JEE Main examination and admission criteria at a particular institute. There can be certain requirements by the institute even if the candidates are eligible for JEE Main.

JEE Main 2027 Qualifying Examination and Compulsory Subjects

The candidates must qualify or clear a recognized Class 12 examination to be eligible for the JEE Main entrance examination.

In order to apply for BE/B Tech courses via the NIT+ method, candidates must have Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects with one out of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or Technical Vocational.

The students belonging to recognized examination boards or open schooling systems who fulfill all the required criteria are also eligible for applying. The candidates appearing from other examination boards should refer to the NTA bulletin.

JEE Main 2027: 75% Criteria for NIT and IIIT Admissions

Clearing JEE Main is not, by itself, a passport to gaining admission into any NITs, IIITs, or other institutions participating in the same.

In case of getting admissions using the NIT+ method, the qualifying marks criterion currently in place says that the candidate must have scored a minimum of 75% marks in class 12th or equivalent OR must be in the top 20 percentile of his/her board. The qualifying criteria for SC/ST students is 65%.

JEE Main 2027 specific admission criteria can be verified from the official JoSAA/CSAB rules at release time.

JEE Main 2027 Attempts for Session 1 and Session 2

JEE Main has been conducted in two sessions in recent years. In JEE Main 2026, NTA conducted Session 1 and Session 2.

If the same two-session structure continues for JEE Main 2027, eligible candidates may be able to appear in either one session or both. However, NTA will confirm the final session structure and schedule through the official notification.

Candidates shouldn't treat Session 1 and Session 2 as separate eligibility years. Both sessions belong to the same examination year.

How Does the Best Score Rule Work in Multiple Sessions?

In JEE Main 2026, candidates who appeared in more than one session had their best Total NTA Score considered for the merit list and ranking according to NTA's result methodology.

If the same system is followed in JEE Main 2027, candidates appearing in both sessions may get an opportunity to improve their performance. However, the final scoring and result methodology will be confirmed by NTA.

Participation Choice Sessions Appeared Score Consideration
Session 1 Only 1 As per NTA's result methodology
Session 2 Only 1 As per NTA's result methodology
Both Sessions 2 Best score, as per applicable NTA rules

How to Prepare Between JEE Main Sessions

Candidates appearing in multiple sessions should use the time between exams to analyse their performance and work on weak areas.

After the first session, review:

  • Conceptual mistakes
  • Calculation errors
  • Time management
  • Question selection
  • Weak chapters
  • Accuracy
  • Speed
  • Negative-marking mistakes

Regular full-length mock tests can also help candidates become familiar with the exam environment and improve their preparation.

JEE Main 2027 Attempt Limit: Key Points to Remember

Candidates applying for JEE Main 2027 must remember the following points:

  • Refer to the official information bulletin of JEE Main 2027 before application.
  • JEE Main eligibility depends on the qualifying examination year.
  • Gap year does not affect JEE Main eligibility.
  • Improvement examination does not normally affect the original year of passing Class 12.
  • JEE Main and JEE Advanced have different eligibility criteria.
  • Sessions 1 and 2, when conducted, come under the same examination year.
  • Referring to the official NTA notice about the number of sessions in 2027.
  • The process of admission to NITs, IIITs and other institutes has certain Class 12 criteria.
  • The existing NIT + system includes the 75%/65% rule or any other applicable alternative of top 20 percent.

Conclusion

The JEE Main attempt limitation for 2027 needs to be looked at in the light of the qualifying-examination year and eligibility criteria provided by NTA. As the official Information Bulletin of JEE Main 2027 is not out yet, it would be incorrect to make assumptions regarding the number of attempts or sessions for that particular year.

Eligibility criteria is currently based on the year of taking the qualifying examination (Class 12th or equivalent). The year in which the candidate passed through the improvement examination remains the original year.

JEE Main has been held in two sessions each year. In case of JEE Main 2027, it is advised to go through the official notification of NTA regarding the year of eligibility, session format, and score calculation methods.
