Maharashtra School Admission Age Limit 2027-28: Check New Rules and Eligibility
The Maharashtra government has announced revised school admission age criteria for Nursery, Junior KG, Senior KG and Class 1. These criteria will come into force gradually from the year 2027–28 onwards.
In terms of the new criteria, the minimum age requirement for nursery will be 3 years as of 2027–28. The minimum age requirement for Junior KG will be 4 years as of 2028–29, while that of Senior KG will be 5 years as of 2029–30, and 6 years for class 1 as of 2030–31.
June 30 has been set as the cut-off date for determining the age of a child. The ultimate goal of introducing these criteria is to have a uniform criterion for school admission for various educational boards in line with NEP 2020.
Maharashtra School Admission Age Limit 2027-28: Class-Wise Criteria
The revised Maharashtra school admission age limit will be implemented in phases over four academic years. Parents should check the applicable academic year and minimum age before applying for admission.
| Class | Minimum Age | Academic Year |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery | 3 years | 2027-28 |
| Junior KG | 4 years | 2028-29 |
| Senior KG | 5 years | 2029-30 |
| Class 1 | 6 years | 2030-31 |
Note: June 30 will be the cut-off date for determining whether a child meets the required minimum age. Parents should check their child's age according to the applicable academic year and class.
Why Has Maharashtra Changed the School Admission Age Rules?
In the past, depending on the board, including the Maharashtra State Board, CBSE, ICSE, and IB, there would be varying age requirements and cut-offs. This often made it difficult for parents to understand what age was right for admission into Nursery, KG, and Class 1.
The new policy aims to create a common age requirement for school admissions in Maharashtra. This is in line with the NEP 2020 guidelines that require children going to Class 1 to be at least six years old.
It must be noted that the application of the new age requirements will not be abrupt; they will be implemented gradually.
Will the New Maharashtra School Admission Rules Apply to Existing Students?
However, the newly revised age limits shall not apply to those learners who are currently attending the school and are enrolled in Nursery through Class 1 in the year 2026-27.
The regular learners who have qualified to attend the current class after passing the previous class in an accredited school shall also be exempt from the revised age limits while joining the next higher class.
Parents should know that the rules for current learners are different from those of new admissions. Those parents who want to enroll their children in a new admission should check the age criteria first.
Maharashtra Allows 15-Day Relaxation in School Admission Age
The government resolution also provides for an extra fifteen days of leeway regarding the minimum and maximum ages required for entry into classes from Nursery to Class 1.
This can be used by school authorities in cases where the age of the child is almost equal to the eligibility requirement. However, this is not an automatic concession; parents must check with the appropriate school for applicability.
Where Can Parents Check the Official Maharashtra School Admission Rules?
Admissions for parents who want their kids to join the schools should ensure that the age criteria is met, and that the June 30 cut-off date and academic year have been confirmed before applying.
The Government Resolution from the School Education Department of Maharashtra has the revised admission requirements and exemptions for those students who are currently studying in the schools. Parents can view the Government Resolution from the Maharashtra Government Resolution website.
Further, they are supposed to follow any further instructions that have been provided by the Directorate of Primary Education, Pune.
