NCERT to Introduce Multilingual Teacher Training for UG, PG and Research Scholars
National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) plans to introduce a multilingual teacher training program designed to help teachers teach in more than one language in schools. The program will emphasize the language proficiency and pedagogical modalities essential for the instruction of more than one language.
It is developed under the NCERT’s plans to improve higher education infrastructure. The main purpose of this program is to solve some practical problems that schools face when the number of students who choose any particular Indian language is small, and a minority of students chooses it.
Multilingual Teacher Training Program by NCERT: Eligibility & Participation
Under the planned model, students studying at the UG, PG, and research level of the NCERT-affiliated institutions can be offered training to teach in more than one language.
The program does not seem to focus only on the linguistic proficiency of trainees. They will also have to acquire knowledge and learn the pedagogy related to the teaching of more than one language.
However, there are some crucial details that are not yet worked out. For instance, the number of languages in which a teacher will be trained and the proficiency levels required in each language need to be worked out.
Reasons Behind Multilingual Teacher Training Program
The proposed program is a response to an existing problem of the school – when a small number of students choose a particular language, it becomes impossible to hire a specialist to teach this language.
According to the idea behind the program, the teachers who are proficient in multiple languages will allow schools to offer more options for students and make the usage of teaching resources more rational.
It is worth mentioning that the multilingual education is also promoted in NEP 2020 as children’s home language, mother tongue, local language, or regional language needs to be used whenever it is possible, especially at the early ages.
Activities of NCERT’s Department of Education in Languages Related to Language & Teacher Education
Department of Education in Languages of NCERT engages in various activities related to curriculum development, preparation of learning resources, teacher training, and methods of instruction in language education.
Among its purposes are promoting multilingualism and strengthening mother-tongue-based language education. The program discussed here can promote these goals as well since it will prepare students to teach more than one language in school.
It needs to be mentioned that the program is under development, and NCERT has not yet announced any details about it officially. Future participants need to wait for the official announcement
