India has made huge progress in medical education. The number of medical colleges has increased by 102%, going from 387 in 2014 to 780 in 2024. At the same time, the number of MBBS seats has risen by 130%, from 51,348 to 1,18,137, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Many states and Union Territories (UTs) that didn’t have any medical colleges in 2013-14, like Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Mizoram, and Nagaland, now each have one medical college. Telangana has shown the biggest growth, with 65 new medical colleges. Goa and Chandigarh still have just one medical college, but they’ve added more seats.

States like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh have seen major growth. Karnataka now has 73 medical colleges, up from 46 in 2013-14. Maharashtra has increased its medical colleges from 44 to 80. Uttar Pradesh has had the biggest rise, going from 30 to 86 medical colleges. Uttar Pradesh also increased its MBBS seats from 3,749 to 12,425.

Telangana, which had no medical colleges earlier, now has 9,040 MBBS seats. Tamil Nadu has added 5,835 seats, reaching a total of 12,050 MBBS seats. Maharashtra’s MBBS seats have grown from 5,590 to 11,845. Rajasthan’s medical colleges have increased from 10 with 1,750 seats in 2013-14 to 43 with 6,475 seats in 2024-25.

Other states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi have also expanded. Madhya Pradesh now has 31 medical colleges with 5,200 seats, compared to 12 colleges with 1,700 seats in 2013-14. Chhattisgarh grew from five colleges with 600 seats to 16 colleges with 2,455 seats. Delhi increased from 7 to 10 medical colleges, with MBBS seats rising from 900 to 1,497.

This growth in medical colleges and MBBS seats shows that India is working hard to improve healthcare and give more chances to students who want to become doctors. With these changes, India is better prepared to meet the growing need for healthcare professionals.
