The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made significant revisions to the eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) UG 2024. Candidates who studied physics, chemistry, biology, or biotechnology as additional subjects in Class 12 are now allowed to appear for the exam. This decision extends to candidates whose applications for eligibility certificates were previously rejected due to this issue.

The NMC, in a meeting held in June, reconsidered the previous approach of the Medical Council of India, taking into account the flexibility permitted by the New Education Policy. According to the official notice, candidates are now permitted to study the requisite subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology along with English) even as additional subjects after passing Class 12th from duly recognized boards.

Official Notice

The recently issued Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 have replaced the previous regulations issued by the MCI for MBBS admissions. The UGMEB clarified that provisions preventing the completion of Biology/Biotechnology or any other requisite subject as an additional subject after passing Class 12th had been challenged before the Delhi High Court and were quashed. This had led to the rejection of eligibility certificate applications and debarment of students from taking the NEET UG exam. It also affected candidates seeking admission to graduate medical courses in foreign institutes due to eligibility requirements.

The NMC emphasized that candidates who become eligible after the date of the public notice will be allowed to appear in NEET UG 2024. Additionally, court cases filed by MCI/NMC in this regard will be withdrawn, and the current position will be explained in all pending litigations, ensuring a prompt resolution.
