The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the National Internship, Placement Training and Assessment (NIPTA) initiative. It will create a standard benchmark to measure internship and job readiness for engineering and diploma students across India.
This 10-12-week structured training will be followed by a standardized assessment, which will be nominally charged, while the training resources are free.

Talented students from smaller towns pursuing engineering and other degree and diploma courses will no longer have to scramble for internships and placements; instead, their talent will be evaluated and better job opportunities will be provided to them.
With the support of the Ministry of Education, IIT Madras has developed a national portal for this purpose, which, in response to industry needs, will not only provide online training to students for three months but also conduct an exam and rank them, which will be shared with industries, who will then offer them jobs based on their needs.
This initiative also focuses on talented students from smaller towns because students studying in larger cities and institutions receive on-campus placement and internship opportunities, while students studying in smaller cities have to search for them.

Exams will be conducted from 2026
According to IIT Madras, exams will be conducted from next year, i.e., 2026. Currently, the national portal for this purpose is ready. So far, approximately 5,000 students from across the country have registered on it. Soon, work will begin to nurture students' talents, including teaching them. Students who take the exam will also receive a certificate from IIT.

A Portal to Provide Employment for Students
According to Professor Shrikant Vedantam of IIT Madras, who is leading this project, this portal, named NIPTA (National Internship, Placement Training and Assessment), has been launched. Discussions have also begun with leading companies in the country.
Its objective is to provide opportunities to students studying in smaller cities and towns. Third-year engineering and other degree programs and final-year diploma students will be eligible to participate.
A three-hour offline exam will be conducted in major cities across the country. The results will be shared with leading companies in the country for now, and later with major companies abroad. The entire process is free. According to Professor Vedantam, this will also greatly benefit industries. They will receive certified, talented students without any hassle.
