The results of West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) 2025 will now be announced soon. This decision has been taken after an important order of the Supreme Court on July 28, 2025, which has removed the legal hurdles in releasing the results.
Supreme Court lifts High Court's Stay
On July 28, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court—Chief Justice BR Gavai, Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice NV Anjaria—hearing the appeal of the state government, lifted the stay imposed by the Calcutta High Court on the new list of OBCs. The court said that "prima facie the order of the High Court appears to be erroneous."
The court gave this order after hearing the arguments of senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the state government. The court also said that "reservation is a subject of the executive and a direct stay on it by the judiciary does not seem appropriate."
Why were WBJEE Results Stayed?
The WBJEE exam was conducted on 27 April 2025. The exam results were to be declared by July 5, but the process was halted after the Calcutta High Court imposed an interim stay on the OBC list. On June 17, the High Court stayed the state government's notifications regarding 140 sub-categories of OBC-A and OBC-B categories.
The state government had prepared a new OBC list in May 2024, which included 77 new communities. But the High Court had rejected it, complicating the situation.
What will Happen Now?
After the Supreme Court's decision, the Higher Education Department has started preparations to release the WBJEE results soon. A senior official of the department said that after reviewing all the legal aspects, the decision is being taken in the interest of the students.
WBJEE board chairperson, Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee said, "We received the directive from the state government on July 30. We will announce the final decision on the results tomorrow, i.e. on July 31."
State education minister Bratya Basu said, "We were already prepared, anticipating the possibility of this situation. We started taking appropriate steps immediately after the Supreme Court order."
