JEE Advanced 2027 Update: No Change in Exam Pattern, Third Attempt Proposal Under Discussion
According to IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal, there will be no immediate changes in JEE Advanced exam. There could be a need to overhaul the examination in the coming years. "The exam has become very coaching dependent and we need to reconsider this," he told The Indian Express.
Also, the question of giving a third attempt at JEE Advanced is being debated. But according to Agrawal, this does not mean a third attempt for all the candidates. As per one of the options under debate, a third attempt can be allowed only in special cases.
At present, candidates are allowed to make two attempts in consecutive years in pursuit of JEE Advanced.
More and more number of students is demanding a third attempt for those who want to take a gap year after Class 12. The student-driven petition for three attempts or two attempts in three consecutive years has gained more than 12,000 signatures till date.
As per the campaigners of the campaign, some of the candidates don't get enough exposure for JEE preparation even before Class 12, while many might miss out one attempt in case of health problems, accidents or any other unknown reasons.
According to Agrawal, introducing a third attempt in JEE will be a difficult choice in terms of policy making. He said that this change will be beneficial for few candidates especially from the rural areas who don't get coaching before Class 12. At the same time, this change might motivate a few to extend the period of preparation along with spending money on coaching.
JEE Advanced May Get Alternative Admission Routes
JEE Advanced will continue to be the main route for admission into conventional courses at IIT Kanpur. However, IIT Kanpur is exploring alternative routes of admission into some select courses.
One such example would be the Bachelor of Cybersecurity (B Cyber) course offered collaboratively between IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. Admissions into this course do not require the candidate to have scored in JEE Advanced. Around 120 candidates were shortlisted based on JEE Main scores and past experience in cybersecurity, and were invited to an on-campus hackathon.
IITs also provide provisions for admitting students via international level Olympiads for some selected courses.
IIT Kanpur Plans Major Expansion
IIT Kanpur is aiming for a goal of raising funds worth Rs 1,000 crores by March 2029. According to Agrawal, about 50 percent of this goal, which amounts to about Rs 4,155 crores, has already been pledged by alumnus, donors, corporate organizations, and government agencies.
The money raised is expected to be used for upgrading research infrastructure facilities, building four new residential halls and creating a Center for Mental Health and Wellbeing.
According to Agrawal, this center is going to be available to students and other individuals seeking help from the institution. Currently, IIT Kanpur has ten full-time counselors and many other experts.
The Class of 1986, of which Agrawal is one member, is expected to pledge funds worth Rs 11 crores for the center, an auditorium and a residential tower.
IIT Kanpur to Focus on New Teaching Methods
According to Agrawal, there have been changes in the learning process of students too. As a result of the increased use of video-based and AI-based platforms by students, class attendance is falling.
Instead of enforcing the attendance of students, the institute will be focusing on creating an atmosphere where students attend classes by their own choice because they feel that attending classes is in their best interest.
IIT Kanpur Wants More Students to Choose R&D
As explained by Agrawal, the majority of students prefer employment upon completion of their studies compared to the few who want to engage in research and development (R&D).
There is an effort by the institute to encourage more involvement in research activities through experience-based learning in an effort to help the students turn their ideas into reality.
As per Agrawal, encouraging students to come up with and implement their ideas would spark their interest in innovation and motivate them to join R&D.
