CBSE 12th Result 2026 : Marks Calculation Explained, Moderation, Grace Marks & Grading

CBSE 12th Result 2026 : Marks Calculation Explained, Moderation, Grace Marks & Grading

The end is near. The results for CBSE Class 12 for 2026 will be released by the Central Board of Secondary Education, and more than 16 lakh students will be refreshing their phones every other hour hoping for good grades. After CBSE releases the result, you can find it at cbse.gov.in, cbseresults.nic.in, DigiLocker, and the Umang app.

But before you start refreshing those websites, something needs to be understood first. How does CBSE calculate your scores? What is moderation? Are grace marks real? Why did your buddy with the same score as yours receive a different grade?

Let's break it all down in plain language.

What Is CBSE's Moderation Policy?

Moderation is CBSE's way of keeping things fair.

The solution to this problem is as follows: The board examination process involves multiple paper sets. One may be a little more difficult than the other. One marker may grade a bit harsher than the other. In the absence of such a system, it would be unfair on the part of the students because of reasons beyond their control.

That's where moderation steps in.

Why CBSE Uses Moderation

Moderation is used by the board to:

  • Reimburse students for ambiguous questions and mistakes in the questions.
  • Even out discrepancies in difficulty between sets of papers.
  • Mitigate subjective issues from different examiners.
  • Keep pass rates stable year-on-year and subject-on-subject.
  • Ensure standardization of marks across the country.

In simple words, moderation makes sure you aren't punished for things you can't control.

Grace Marks: What Does the 'Up to 15%' Rule Mean?

It is one of the most common queries every results season.

While CBSE does not officially state any percentage of grace marks awarded through its policies, there is a very interesting story behind it.

In 2017, during a case in the Delhi High Court, it became clear that CBSE was allowed to grant grace marks up to 15% for especially tough questions. In fact, at that time, CBSE was trying to abolish moderation completely because inflated marks had raised college cut-off marks too high.

According to a media report, CBSE finally did not contest the directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Moderation continued as before. In addition, the then Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar also opined that marks must be representative of performance, not inflation

How Grace Marks Work in Practice Today

  • Grace marks aren’t given to everyone.
  • They’re only added for questions that are flawed or unusually difficult.
  • The purpose is to keep things fair, not to increase scores.

So when someone says “everyone gets an extra 15%,” that’s just a myth. Grace marks are given selectively and only under certain conditions.

How Does CBSE Decide if You Pass?

The pass criteria for the Senior School Certificate Examination are clear and simple.

To pass Class 12, you need to:

  • Ensure you score 33% and above in all subjects, whether theory or practical or both
  • Get grades better than 'E' in all subjects
  • Pass the internal examination

In case you fail in any particular subject, there’s always hope for you. Compartment or supplementary exams are provided through the CBSE board. Sometimes, the option of replacing the subject may also arise if you have taken an additional subject along.

An important point to remember here is that CBSE does not provide pision or distinction anymore. There are no First Class or Distinction marks in your report card anymore.

Scaling and Relative Grading: Why Your Marks Alone Don't Decide Your Grade

This part confuses most students. So let's go slow.

As opposed to other examinations conducted in schools where certain scores determine your grade (for example, 91-100 will fetch you A1), the CBSE employs a relative grading scheme. Your grade will depend on how well you scored relative to others who have passed the same subject.

How Relative Grading Works

  1. All students who pass a subject are arranged in rank order based on marks
  2. They're pided into eight equal groups, called octiles
  3. Your grade depends on which group you fall into

Here's a simple table to make it clearer:

Grade Student Rank Description
A1 Top 1/8th Highest performers
A2 Next 1/8th Very good
B1 3rd 1/8th Good
B2 4th 1/8th Above average
C1 5th 1/8th Average
C2 6th 1/8th Below average
D1 7th 1/8th Needs improvement
D2 8th 1/8th Just passing
E Fail Essential repeat

What This Means for You

Grades are not allotted based on the marks slab. The performance of other students determines the grade. Therefore, the cut-off for an A1 grade in physics can differ from that of English, and will keep changing every year.

In case both the candidates secure the same marks, both of them receive the same grades. The Central Board of Secondary Education resolves ties in this manner.

The subjects which have less than 500 candidates passing them are graded according to similar subjects for maintaining consistency.

What Should You Do After the Result Is Declared?

After receiving your result, pause before responding.

  • Save your marksheet on the Digilocker app for future convenience.
  • Review the marks in all subjects.
  • In case of discrepancies, CBSE offers an option to apply for a re-evaluation or verification of marks within a certain time frame.
  • For candidates who did not pass any subject, check the timetable for the compartment examination at the official CBSE website.

Results represent a single instance of an examination, not the final judgment on your life ahead. There are many opportunities regardless of the scores.

Final Thoughts

The CBSE mark awarding is not haphazard, despite how unpredictable it may seem at times. The use of moderation ensures consistency in scoring from one set of question papers to another. Grace marks correct any injustices in the questions. The relative assessment pits you against your contemporaries.

It is now clear how all these work to ensure that you are rewarded for your hard work.
