The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is considering conducting exams twice a year for class 10 and 12 students from 2026. The board will soon make the proposal public to seek feedback from stakeholders, a media report said.
Why is CBSE Making This Change?
The board is currently working on a plan to conduct two exams annually, which also includes restructuring the academic year to accommodate both exams without disrupting undergraduate admissions.
What Will Change in the CBSE Exam System?
The move is part of the government's efforts to implement the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to transform the education system in India. The change is aimed at reducing stress on students and providing them an opportunity to improve their scores.
According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the new system will allow students to take class 10 and 12 board exams twice a year starting from the academic year 2025-2026. The minister held detailed deliberations with secretary school education, CBSE chairman and other officials of the ministry and CBSE on February 18.

Currently, class 10 and class 12 students take their exams in February-March, and the results are declared in May. If they are not happy with their performance, they can try to improve in a subject through supplementary exams in July. Also, students who have not been able to clear their papers can also appear for these exams.
