The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced updates to the Higher Secondary curriculum for Class 12 students. These changes will take effect starting this year, specifically for students registering from the 2024-25 session. Notably, revisions have been made to the marks structure of certain subjects, including health and physical education, music, and visual arts.

In the health and family education subject, the theory component has been increased from 40 to 70 marks, with the practical component now carrying a weightage of 30 percent. Similarly, for music and visual arts, both theory and practical components will be marked out of 50 each.

Additionally, due to low student enrollment, subjects like Punjabi, Gujarati, and French have been discontinued. However, to provide more options, the WBCHSE has introduced several vocational subjects such as banking financial services and insurance, food processing, and telecom.

Furthermore, as part of the curriculum revision, new subjects have been added, including applied artificial intelligence, cyber security, and science of well-being.

In line with these changes, the council has also updated the names and codes of certain subjects. For instance, home management and family resource (HMFR) will now be known as human development and resource management (HDRM). Similarly, agronomy (AGNM) has been renamed agriculture (AGRI), and health and physical education (PHED) will retain its name but with a new code, HPED.

These modifications reflect the council's ongoing efforts to adapt the curriculum to evolving educational needs. Previously, the council also introduced a semester system for Class 11 students starting from the 2024-25 academic session.
