West Bengal Board Exams 2027: Madhyamik, HS Dates Revised Due to Census Exercise

According to WBBSE, the Madhyamik examination slated to take place in February 2027 needs to be postponed to March next year because the teachers will be busy with the Census operation. This new time frame has been presented before the state School Education Department for approval. The decision on the matter awaits finalization.

As per the new time schedule presented by the board, the Madhyamik exam, which was to be held from February 15 to 25, 2027, is likely to be conducted from March 2 to 16, 2027. WBBSE chairman Laltu Das informed that the change has been proposed because the teachers who will conduct the Madhyamik exam will also have to help with Census enumeration next month.

As per the new schedule, the timings of the exam will be 10:45 am to 2 pm. Students will get 15 minutes for reading the question paper and writing will start from 11 am.

Why Are West Bengal Madhyamik Exam Dates Being Changed?

This revision is connected to the Census 2027 program, which is set to start from January 25 to February 28. Phase two of this process involves door-to-door listing and will entail the employment of government personnel, including schoolteachers.

Previously, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, had requested examination boards not to schedule any important exams prior to March 18, 2027, with the intention of not allowing census duties to interfere with the conduct of board exams.

WBBSE had already prepared itself for the original February schedule. However, conducting census duties along with these board examinations would have caused several complications, especially because of the requirement of teachers in the examinations.

West Bengal HS Exam 2027 Dates May Also Change

The suggested revision in Madhyamik exams might also influence the timetable of the West Bengal Higher Secondary examinations.

According to reports, West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) is likely to put forth a similar suggestion to postpone the fourth-semester Higher Secondary exams. The Higher Secondary examinations are initially scheduled to take place in the first week of March.

Though there is a chance of revising the schedule in favour of taking up the examinations after Holi, the actual dates will be decided by the concerned authorities.

Earlier, School Education Minister Dipak Burman clarified that the department had received the proposal from Madhyamik exams and was considering it.

West Bengal Madhyamik 2027: What Does the Proposed Change Mean for Students?

In the case of Madhyamik classes, the suggested modification may alter the exam schedule by about two weeks. But students should continue studying in accordance with the current schedule unless there is an official announcement from WBBSE and the state government.

The new schedule starting from March 2 and ending on March 16 will allow the board to have enough time to arrange the examinations after the Census enumeration. The suggestion can also prevent the possibility that teachers would be burdened with both Census and exam duties at once.

The suggested schedule alteration will influence the later stages of the exam process, namely answer scripts evaluation, results tabulation, etc. As a consequence, the board will need to make necessary provisions to avoid affecting the admission to higher secondary classes.

The results announcement timing will also play an important role for those who want to get admission to Class 11 and prepare for the national entrance exams. The schedule postponement has been made in order to solve administrative problems associated with the Census enumeration.

Students should consider the new schedule as the proposed one because the final schedule will be made only after the official announcement of the government and WBBSE.
