Karnataka Board Exams: Supreme Court Halts Class 8-10 Half-Yearly Results

The Supreme Court has criticized the Karnataka government for "harassing" students by holding board exams for various classes. The court has issued an order stopping the announcement of results for classes 8, 9, and 10 until further notice.

A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma directed that exams should not be held in districts where they haven’t been conducted yet. The bench told senior advocate Devadatt Kamat, representing the Karnataka government, “Why are you harassing the students? You’re the state. Don’t make this an ego issue. If you care about student welfare, open good schools. Don’t pressure them unnecessarily.”

The court pointed out that no other state is following Karnataka’s current educational model.

Kamat informed the court that the government had withdrawn its circular for holding board exams in classes 5, 8, 9, and 10 for the 2023-24 academic year in seven rural districts. However, exams were conducted in 24 other districts.

The Supreme Court has asked the Karnataka government to file a detailed affidavit about the examination process within four weeks.

This case arose from an appeal by the Organisation for Unaided Recognised Schools against the Karnataka High Court's decision on March 22. The High Court had allowed the state to conduct board exams for various classes for the 2023-24 academic year, overturning a previous ruling from March 6. That earlier ruling had nullified the state’s October 2023 decision to conduct board exams through the Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB).
