NEET 2026 Choice Filling: Correct Preference Order; Step-by-Step Guide

NEET 2026 result has been released by NTA at neet.nta.nic.in. NEET UG 2026 counselling dates will be released soon by the MCC. As soon as the MCC declares the dates, then all eligible candidates have to fill choices and lock the same. Both are important and must not miss any step, otherwise, even after rank, nothing is going to happen.

Choice filling for NEET 2026 counselling will be done online by logging into mcc.nic.in website, selecting the institutes and courses you wish to study, arranging them in the order from first preference to last preference, and finally locking the choices. Choice filling process of Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for allocation of seats is done very systematically from the selected order of preference only.

What Is Choice Filling in NEET UG Counselling?

Choice filling refers to the point where you feed to the MCC the colleges and courses of your choice in a specific sequence.

MCC provides you a seat matrix, which consists of the total number of colleges, courses, and seats available for you. You make your own preference list out of this list. Your seat will depend on your NEET ranking, category, and sequence in which you have marked the seats.

Choice locking refers to the final point when you lock your choice list. Now onwards, the software will allot seats automatically based on your list.

The critical aspect which many students overlook is that MCC will not take into account your choice list as a wish-list. It will scan the list from top to bottom till it finds an available seat for you.

Who Fills Choices, and Where?

Counselling runs on two tracks:

There are four rounds in MCC Counseling Process:

• Round 3
• Vacant Seat Round

The number of rounds in MCC counseling varies based on how many vacant seats there are. Before 2022, choice filling was only done in the first three rounds. However, it is now done throughout all rounds.

How to Fill Choices for NEET UG Counselling 2026

First, register yourself and make payment of counselling fees for your category. Choice filling will not be activated before that.

Steps are mentioned below:

• Go to the MCC official website mcc.nic.in.
• Log in using NEET UG 2026 Roll Number, Password and Security Pin. New registrants will have to click on 'New Registration'.
• Open 'Available Choices'.
• Click on Choice Filling icon. The courses and colleges that you are eligible for come in the left basket. Selecting an option will transfer it into the right basket. The right basket contains your list.
• Click on 'Save & Continue' button so as to save what you have selected from being deleted.
• Arrange your choices. You need to use the up arrow button to increase the rank of your choice and use the down arrow to decrease its rank. You can delete it as well.
• Change positions of your choices if required. Select Source Choice and Destination Choice and get both interchanged by portal along with rearranging the remaining.
• Delete multiple choices in case of over filling. Just tick the box next to the options which you do not wish to select and hit 'Confirm' button.

There is no cap on the total number of choices. Select as many as you are willing to join.

NEET 2026 Choice Locking Process

Choice filling is not sufficient. None will be allotted until you lock.

The procedure for locking is as follows:

• Click Lock Choice button. It becomes operative only on the notified dates.
• Your choices will be displayed on screen along with their respective restrictions, if any.
• Type your password. No locking takes place without entering your password.
• Confirm. Message will flash in front of you informing about locking of your filled choice and prohibiting any kind of changes thereafter.
• Take a printout. It bears the date and time of locking, your computer's IP address and a uniquely generated number by the system. Store it.
• Logout and close all windows in that particular session.

Two points of great significance:

• Once locked, your choices can never be unlocked. Be very careful while placing your order.
• In case of not locking your choices, the system itself will lock your order automatically at 5:00 PM of the last date of locking with your current list.
• Upon logging into the system after locking, you will be able to view your list but no changes will be allowed.

How to Modify Your Choices Before Locking

• Navigate to the following website: http://mcc.nic.in.
• Log in to the website.
• Go for the 'Modify Selected Options' button.
• Check the list which has been provided by you before.
• Drag and drop the options in the order you desire.
• Delete those institutions which you don’t wish to and replace them with some other institutions.
• Be sure that you are ready with the modification process.
• Click on the 'Submit' button to modify the list.

If possible try doing the task through a laptop computer as making fifty options one after another through mobile phone causes error.

To be honest with you, the tuition fees at the universities that are officially regarded as such are much higher than those at government-run institutions – by multiples. If you are going to pay with savings or a bank loan, it would make sense to consider the government-run colleges before them.

Factors to Check Before You Finalise the List

College ranking & reputation. Do not look at its name only. Consider infrastructure, faculty & lab facilities. Poorly equipped college will deprive you of five years of study.

Course, rather than College. MCC counselling has MBBS, BDS & BSc Nursing courses. Please read course code. Certain institutes accept only female candidates for BSc Nursing course hence making it ineligible if chosen by a male candidate.

Closing ranks in previous years. Compare your rank with the closing ranks of previous years for each college in your group. It will give an idea about what is realistic and what is a hope choice. Both should be added but realistic choices should not be kept too down.

Bonding & fees. Certain colleges have heavy bonding & even certain service condition. Make sure you read those terms before adding such college and not after allotment.

Attached Hospital. It helps you get real cases from second year of studies. Herein lies the development of your clinical skills.

Post Graduate courses. If college has Post graduate courses on its campus then it is bound to have better faculty & academic culture.

• Too many choices are added at the start and none remains after subsequent rounds.
• Making sure that your ideal college lies so low on the list that it doesn’t even get read.
• Selecting all the choices but not locking them.
• Using your best friend’s order without remembering his preferences of rank, category, and budget.
• Last minute selections when the website is congested.
