On Monday, July 22, the Supreme Court directed the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) to provide the correct answer for a controversial Physics question in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024. A three-member expert committee from IIT-Delhi will determine which option for the Physics question is scientifically accurate.

The order was passed by a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra. This decision came during a hearing on over 40 petitions related to NEET UG 2024, which has faced allegations including paper leaks, inflated top ranks, and other irregularities.

Issue with Physics Question and Grace Marks
During the third hearing, petitioners challenged the NTA’s decision to award grace marks for question number 19 in the Physics section. This decision led to 44 students achieving the top rank. The question in dispute involved two statements about atoms:
- “Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain equal numbers of positive and negative charges.”
- “Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.”
Candidates had to choose the “most appropriate answer” from four options:
- The first is correct but the second is incorrect.
- The first is incorrect but the second is correct.
- Both statements are correct.
- Both statements are incorrect.
The controversy arose because the old NCERT textbook states that atoms are stable, while the new version clarifies that atoms of “most” elements are stable. The provisional answer key released by the NTA on May 29 showed one option as correct, but over 10,000 candidates challenged this due to discrepancies with the older NCERT textbook.
Next Steps
The Supreme Court has asked for a review of the question's correct answer. The hearing will continue tomorrow, with the NTA and the Centre expected to make further submissions.
