Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the QS World Rankings 2025. Once again, the top position has been secured by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while the second position has been obtained by Imperial College London. Cambridge and Stanford University have slipped to 5th and 6th positions respectively.
The QS World University Rankings' 21st edition is a unique ranking emphasizing employability and stability. It includes more than 1,500 institutions from 105 higher education systems worldwide. Indian universities included in the top 150 list are IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been consistently ranked as the world's top institution for the 13th consecutive year. Speaking of Indian universities, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) has moved from 149th position in 2024 to 118th position in the 2025 rankings, marking a significant advancement of 31 places. MIT has been ranked as the top university in the world in 11 subject areas, including Chemical Engineering; Civil & Structural Engineering; Computer Science & Information Systems; Data Science & Artificial Intelligence; Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Linguistics; Materials Science; Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering; Mathematics; Physics & Astronomy; and Statistics & Operational Research.

QS World University Rankings 2025: List of Indian Universities That Got Featured
IIT Bombay has performed better compared to the 2024 rankings and has secured the 118th position, while IIT Delhi has also shown improvement compared to the previous year and is placed at 150th position.

This year, there has been improvement in the rankings of various IITs as well. IIT Kharagpur is ranked 211th, IIT Madras is at 227th position, and IIT Kanpur has secured the 263rd position. Additionally, Delhi University has also been included in the list and has attained the 328th position. Following this, IIT Roorkee is at 335th, IIT Guwahati is at 344th, and Anna University is at 383rd position.
Furthermore, IIT Indore is ranked 477th, IIT BHU is at 531st position, and JNU has attained the 580th rank.
Three new indicators have been introduced this year along with existing indicators, and the weightage for other indicators has also been balanced. Stability, employability, and international research collaboration are dimensions that have either been strengthened or introduced for the first time.
Various aspects are given importance when preparing the rankings. Educational prestige is given 30%, employer prestige 15%, faculty-student ratio 10%, citations per faculty 20%, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and stability each are given 5% importance.
In 2023, among the Indian universities included in the World University Rankings 2024 list, IIT Bombay is at 149th place, IIT Delhi at 197th place, IISc Bangalore at 225th place, IIT-KGP at 271st place, IIT Kanpur at 278th place, and IIT Madras at 285th place.
