GATE 2026: IIT Guwahati Ensures Proper Coordination to Avoid UPSC Exam Conflicts

There was concern among students regarding the scheduling conflict between the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 and the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2026.

However, the GATE 2026 organizing committee at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has resolved this issue.

GATE 2026 Exam Dates and Application Process

The GATE 2026 exam, conducted by IIT Guwahati, will be held on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. The application process for the exam began on August 28, 2025, and the deadlines are now set for September 28, 2025 (without late fee) and October 9, 2025 (with late fee).

ESE 2026 Preliminary Exam Date

As per the annual calendar released by UPSC, the ESE 2026 Preliminary Exam is scheduled for February 8, 2026.

IIT Guwahati Initiative

IIT Guwahati has ensured that the GATE 2026 Main Engineering papers will not be held on February 8, 2026, to avoid any conflict with the ESE 2026 Preliminary Examination. This decision has brought relief to students who were preparing for both exams.

GATE 2026 Exam Pattern and Papers

The GATE 2026 exam will consist of a total of 30 papers, of which candidates can appear for one or a maximum of two papers. The combination of two papers will have to be selected from the combination list. All papers will be in English and will be entirely objective in nature.
