JEE Main 2027 75% Criteria: Is It Required for Registration or NIT Admission?

JEE Main 2027 75% Criteria: Students do not need 75% marks in Class 12 to register for or appear in JEE Main 2027. However, the minimum board marks requirement is relevant for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other government-funded technical institutes.

According to the latest available JoSAA admission rules, candidates generally need 75% marks in Class 12 or a place in their board's top 20 percentile. The minimum marks requirement is 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

The final admission criteria for the 2027–28 academic session will depend on the JoSAA 2027 rules.

Is 75% Required for JEE Main 2027 Registration?

No. No minimum percentage of Class 12 is prescribed by the NTA for taking admission in JEE Main 2027.

As per the official bulletin of information, those candidates who have passed Class 12th or its equivalent exam in 2025 or 2026, or who will be appearing in 2027, are eligible.

Those candidates who had passed Class 12th before 2024 are not eligible for JEE Main 2027.

It implies that those students having less than 75% marks in Class 12th are eligible for appearing in JEE Main 2027 entrance test.

Is 75% Required for NIT Admission in 2027?

The requirement of scoring 75% is for admission process based on the last available rules of JoSAA.

In order to get admissions into NITs, IIITs and other government aided technical institutions for admission in 2026, there were two options laid out in the rules of admission:

  • Score a minimum aggregate of 75% in class 12 examination (65% for students from SC/ST/PWD categories).
  • Otherwise, qualify among the 20% in the category in the respective board.

Candidates have to fulfill both qualifying criteria, apart from other criteria of admission.

Note: There have been no announcement of JoSAA 2027 rules of admission till date.

What Is the Top 20 Percentile Rule?

The top 20 percentile scheme is yet another method for students failing to fulfill the mandatory Class 12 percentage criteria.

Under this criterion, candidates are required to be among the top 20 percent successful candidates of their respective board and category in the prescribed subjects.

The minimum qualifying marks differ from one board to another, as well as category and year of exam. The top 20 percentile cut-off is not equivalent to 80% marks.

Can Students With Less Than 75% Get NIT Admission?

Yes, in accordance with the currently available guidelines, candidates securing less than 75% can also be eligible if they fulfill the necessary top 20 percentile criterion.

For instance, a General category candidate securing 72% in Class 12 would fail to fulfill the minimum marks criteria of 75%. However, he can still become eligible as per the board criteria using the top 20 percentile criterion.

It should be noted that just qualifying JEE Main ranks cannot help the candidates gain admission if they do not satisfy the Class 12 eligibility criteria.

Candidates can check for examination eligibility at jeemain.nta.nic.in and for counselling and admission at josaa.nic.in.

The main point of difference is very clear – 75% marks are not needed for appearing in JEE Main 2027; however, Class 12 performance matters for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
