NEET Stray Vacancy Round 2026: Rules, Eligibility, Risks and How to Participate

The NEET 'Stray Vacancy Round' is conducted to fill remaining seats in MBBS, BDS, and other eligible undergraduate medical courses. It is typically the final regular stage of MCC counseling.

Medical seats may remain vacant even after three rounds of counseling due to candidates failing to report, admissions being cancelled, or seats becoming vacant at a late stage.

The pressure is high during this round: time is limited, choices are final, and candidates allotted a seat are expected to join.

What is the NEET stray vacancy round?

MCC has four rounds online for Undergraduate medical counselling:

• First Round
• Second Round
• Third Round which was also known as Mop-up Round
• Stray Vacancy Round

The stray round consists of the leftover seats in round 3. It may consist of AIQ seats, deemed university seats, AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities and many others.

From the most recent bulletin issued by MCC, it is confirmed that stray counseling of AIQ and deemed universities is done through the online medium. The colleges do not make any selections personally and allot seats through phone calls to the applicants.

State Counselling Authorities conduct separate stray rounds for the seats under their jurisdiction.

The table is based on the latest completed MCC UG counselling scheme. The 2026 bulletin may revise a condition, so read it before registering.

NEET Stray Vacancy Round 2026 Dates

The above table has been prepared according to the latest MCC UG counselling process that has been completed. There may be a change in one of the conditions mentioned in the 2026 bulletin, hence, please go through it before registration.

There has been no announcement by MCC regarding the official schedule of stray vacancies for NEET UG 2026.

The schedule will be released only after planning of the previous round of counselling process. It must include dates for:

• Registration and payment
• Choice filling
• Choice locking
• Processing of seat allotment
• Provisional/ Final results
• Reporting at the allotted college

Don’t use dates of 2025 for 2026. Academic calendar may differ according to seat approvals, court orders or examination dates.

Please visit the MCC website regularly. According to MCC, it does not individually inform all the candidates regarding counselling process.

Who can participate in the NEET Stray Vacancy Round 2026?

The NEET qualification in itself does not mean that you are eligible for this round. MCC sees to your registration and whether you had a seat allotted to you in a previous round.

As per the last completed round of MCC scheme, those who do not fall into the list of ineligible candidates can participate in this round.

Candidates Who may be Eligible

You may be eligible if:

• You had qualified for NEET UG 2026.
• You had applied for the MCC stray vacancy round.
• You do not have a combined MBBS/BDS/Other Eligible Seat.
• You did not get an admission seat in previous rounds of MCC.
• You had applied in Round 3 and did not get any seat.
• Your name is still on the list of eligible candidates after the verification process by MCC and states.
• You satisfy the conditions of the college where you have chosen to apply.

The candidate who had recently applied for Round 3 and got no seats was eligible for the stray round according to the 2025 scheme.

Candidates Who May be Ineligible

The recent MCC notice mentioned the following as ineligible candidates:

• Those candidates who have not registered in the stray vacancy round
• Candidates who possess or attached to any seat at the start of stray round
• Candidates allotted seat in Round 3 of MCC but did not report
• Candidates debarred on account of MCC and state counselling data sharing
• Candidates where there was cancellation of admission or candidature
• Candidates who do not meet conditions of the course, quota, or category

Candidates allotted seat in Round 3 but did not report lose their security deposit and will be disqualified from subsequent counselling rounds.

Is Fresh Registration Allowed in the Stray Vacancy Round?

Yes, the most recent MCC information brochure did allow new registrations and new choice filling in the last stray seat round.

This is important since there are various old manuals that state stray round to be a college level activity without any new registration. This statement does not tally with the recent MCC AIQ scheme.

Candidates have to go through the official MCC portal. Seats are not allotted manually or via agents by MCC.

How to Participate in the NEET Stray Vacancy Round 2026

Step 1: Go through the Official Stray Eligibility Criteria

Log in to the MCC UG Counselling portal and download the stray-round notification.

Verify if your previous allotment, reporting, or participation in state counselling is affecting your eligibility.

The data exchange takes place between MCC and state authorities after Round 3. The candidate with his/her name appearing in allotted or joined list shall not be eligible for AIQ stray round.

Step 2: Review vacancy list

MCC prepares seat matrix prior to or in process of choice filling.

Go through the college name, course, quota, and category details. The vacancy available in one category cannot automatically be treated as available for other category.

The seat lists may be revised. See if any addition, reduction or conversion of seats has taken place.

Step 3: Registration and payment of charges

Use your NEET application details to register for the counselling process. You may require:

• NEET Application Number
• NEET Roll Number
• Date of Birth
• Registered Mobile No.
• Registered Email Id
• Counselling Password
• Category/Nationality details

Pay the requisite registration fee and security deposit. Take note of payment receipt and ensure that the transaction is reflected on the website.

Step 4: Upload new choices

The earlier choices cannot carry forward automatically. Choose only those colleges which you would be ready to join. See the annual fee, hostel charge, bond details, location, and mode of payment before including a college in the choice list.

The MCC advises candidates to verify the fees charged by the college due to possible changes and since many deemed universities charge very high annual fee.

Step 5: Order of choices

Put the college which you prefer at first place. It will be checked serially by the software and the highest ranked college among the chosen colleges and available at your rank, category and quota shall be allotted to you.

Suppose you have selected 25 colleges. Suppose first 10 colleges are already closed when your rank is reached and only choice no. 11 remains open at your category. In this case, the software may allot choice 11 and stops checking the further options.

Step 6: Lock your choices

Review each of the choices before locking. Verify:

• College Name
• Course
• Quota
• Category
• Annual Fee
• Bond
• Hostel Fee
• Location
• Preference order

The locked choices cannot be modified later. Download the locked choice slip.

Step 7: Obtain allotment result

MCC prepares the result with help of NEET rank, your choices, category, eligibility for quota and seat availability.

Download allotment letter after declaration of final result.

MCC prepares allotments online on the basis of merit and choices submitted by the candidate. It does not nominate any candidate for a particular seat.

Step 8: Report to allotted college

Contact your allotted college without delay. Find out about:

• Time of reporting
• Original certificates/documents
• Tuition Fee
• Modes of payments accepted
• Medical examination
• Hostel allotment
• College affidavits
• Bond conditions

Certain colleges require 2-3 days for completing admission formalities. MCC does not extend the joining date for an individual candidate.

Main rules for Stray Vacancy Seat Allotment

Joining the allotted seat

The candidate who is awarded a stray round seat has to mandatorily attend the allotted college; otherwise, the candidate will lose his/her security amount. The candidate is not allowed to join the subsequent counselling round process.

Resignation after joining

Joined stray-round seats are permanent as per the most recent MCC procedure.

Afterward, there are no procedures for upgrading. The candidates must join a college after verifying the complete fees and terms.

Choice filling controls the result

The system may allocate to you any university that is in your list.

Being of low preference does not necessarily mean non-consent. A university should appear on your list if you can admit to it and afford to study there.

State and MCC participation are separate

MCC and state counseling have different portals, timetables, and seat lists.

State allotment could have an impact on stray round MCC admission since information about candidates who have been allotted or joined is shared among concerned authorities.

Losing the security deposit

Candidate loses his/her security deposit in case he/she gets a seat in stray round and does not join.

Choosing an unaffordable college

Private and deemed college fees can be much higher than government college fees.

Verify the cost of tuition, hostel accommodation, caution fee, and other charges before choice-locking. You should call the college’s admission office when there is a problem understanding the fee structure.

Missing the reporting deadline

Stray-round reporting windows can be short. Plan your travel ahead of time. Have your finances and all documentation in order. It won’t help you to have a train delay, no banking services, or no certificate.

Using an invalid category certificate

Your allotted quota seat will be affected if your EWS/OBC-NCL certificate expires.

Stray Vacancy Round and Special Stray Vacancy Round

A special stray vacancy round can also be announced in case of vacant seats even after the regular stray round.

The procedure is not certain. The MCC conducts it via a separate announcement depending upon the number of vacancies, deadlines for admission, and relevant guidelines.

However, the conditions of eligibility can also vary. For instance, the MCC conducted a Special Stray Vacancy Round during the 2025 UG counseling process and issued a separate schedule, vacancy matrix, and eligibility notice.

Avoid making any plans to join based on any such special round. Consider the regular stray vacancy round as the final confirmed round after its schedule announcement.
