NEET UG Counselling 2026: MCC New Upgrade, Resignation And NRI Quota Rules Explained
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has made big changes to the online counselling process for NEET UG and postgraduate medical admissions this year. The idea is to make admissions easier, cut down on paperwork, and give medical aspirants a clearer system to follow.
All these new features have been informed to the respective states' counselling bodies prior to the commencement of NEET UG 2026 counselling by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Likewise, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) informed the candidates about the commencement of counselling by the MCC.
No Physical Reporting for Candidates Seeking Upgrades
If you get a seat, and you opt for "Upgrade" or "Willing to Upgrade" in subsequent rounds, then you will not be required to go to your allocated college for completing admission formalities.
Your seat is guaranteed in the system until you get an upgraded seat, provided you follow all the procedures laid down by the MCC.
It should help in saving travel as well as formalities on the part of the candidates.
Seat Resignation Now goes Online
MCC has moved seat resignation online for candidates who want to leave their allotted seat, wherever the rules allow it.
You can now send your resignation request through the MCC portal before the deadline. There's no need to visit the college in person to hand over documents.
This option works only within the rules and timelines set for each round.
NRI Quota Applicants can Upload Documents Online
If you are applying for an NRI quota in a deemed university, you now have the option of uploading your documents on the MCC portal directly.
Previously, there was additional correspondence required for this process. This online document upload helps in better management of your documents.
MCC Trains States and Colleges
To roll this out smoothly, MCC has started training the people who handle medical admissions.
It held sessions for State Directorate of Medical Education officials in May and June 2026. A session for medical institutions took place on July 27, 2026, and more are planned for government and private colleges.
Clear Seat and Fee Details to Help you Choose
MCC wants candidates to have clear information on available seats and college fees before they decide.
MCC handles counselling for 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats and 100% of seats in deemed and central universities under NEET UG. States and Union Territories manage most other seats, so they've been asked to make seat and fee details easy to find.
