CUET 2026: What Is a Safe Score for Top Colleges? Complete Strategy

CUET 2026: What Is a Safe Score for Top Colleges? Complete Strategy

Achieving a good score in CUET 2026 is possible not merely through hard work, but also by studying smartly. With the number of students appearing for the exam increasing every year, you need a clear plan that ensures accuracy, speed, and smart decision-making.

Everything you need to know to reach your target college with the right strategy is right here.

What Is a Safe Score in CUET 2026?

Your safe score depends on which college you are targeting. Here is a simple explanation:

College Type Target Score What It Means
Central Universities (JNU, BHU, DU campus colleges) Above 720 Requires high effort and strong performance
Other Colleges (DU off-campus, other universities) Around 600–720 A moderate score can secure admission

Always check the previous year's cutoffs and percentiles for your target college. That'll help you set a realistic score goal.

5 Strategies to Secure a Safe Score in CUET 2026

1. Subject and College Prioritization

First, identify your strong and weak subjects. Your strong subjects should be the ones that boost your overall score; strive to secure maximum marks in them. As for your weak subjects, your objective is simple: do not let them drag down your total score. Aim to secure at least the passing marks in each of these subjects.

For instance, if you are attempting a subject worth 200 marks that consists of 50 questions, aim to score at least 100 marks in it.

2. PYQ Domination

Previous Year Questions (PYQs) are one of the most useful tools for CUET prep. You may not get the same questions, but you'll definitely see similar patterns. Since CUET is still a relatively new exam, the number of PYQs available is limited. That's exactly why you should practice every single one of them thoroughly.

3. Mock Tests

Mock tests aren't just for practice — they're for analysis. Here's what they help you do:

  • Understand your current performance level
  • Learn how to manage time during the exam
  • Find out if your preparation needs more work

Try to take at least three to four mock tests per week, or a minimum of one per subject per week.

4. Time Management and Smart Attempt Strategy

This is precisely where CUET differs significantly from CBSE Board examinations. In Board exams, you are encouraged to attempt every question. In CUET, however, this approach can prove to be highly detrimental.

The reason for this is—CUET features negative marking.

Answer Type Marks
Correct Answer +5 marks
Wrong Answer −6 marks (−5 for wrong + −1 penalty)
Unanswered 0 marks

Think of it this way—a correct answer takes you five steps forward, but an incorrect answer sets you back six steps.

Therefore, during the exam, if you still have doubts about a question after 30 seconds, skip it. Use the "Mark for Review" option and return to that question if time permits. For instance, the English section consists of 50 questions and is allotted 60 minutes—meaning approximately 30 seconds per question. To score over 200 out of 250 marks, aim to correctly solve at least 40 questions.

Exam Type Strategy What It Means
CBSE Boards Attempt everything Partial marks are awarded; focus on completion
CUET Skip what you don't know Accuracy matters more; 0 is better than −6

5. Build a Strong Mindset

One of the most difficult challenges of the CUET is resisting the urge to answer every single question. Due to habits ingrained over years of board examinations, leaving a question unanswered feels wrong. However, in the context of the CUET, the prudent course of action is to skip any question about which you are unsure.

Do not get stuck on a difficult question. Move forward, stay focused, and safeguard your score against unnecessary deductions.

Pro Tip: Keep a Mistakes Notebook

After every mock test, make sure to write down all the questions you answered incorrectly. Regularly review these mistakes. This simple habit prevents you from repeating the same errors and keeps your preparation on track—especially since CUET questions can be unpredictable.
