DU Relaxes 28-Credit Promotion Rule: What Changes for 2025-26 Students? Check Details

DU Relaxes 28-Credit Promotion Rule: What Changes for 2025-26 Students? Check Details

There will be no need to follow the rule of obtaining 28 credits for promotion for the students admitted in 2025–26 at the University of Delhi (DU) as part of the NEP Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF)-2022.

This follows a one-time modification of the 28-credits-promotion rule notification by the DU Examination Branch on September 21, 2025. As per the notification, students admitted in 2025–26 do not need to follow the 28-credits criterion and they will be promoted after completing one year of study irrespective of the number of credits they have secured.

DU Examination Branch has made it clear that the one-time modification is applicable only to the 2025–26 batch of students. It has not done away with the 28-credits requirement for all other undergraduate batches. DU’s Examination Branch has posted the latest notification on its website along with its earlier notifications relating to passing and promotion criteria of NEP UGCF-2022.

Implication of the latest DU Modification for Students

As per the credit-based passing system, a student has 44 credits in his/her kitty during the two semesters of an academic year. The previous rule required students to acquire 28 credits out of these 44 for promotion to the next academic year.

The new modification deletes this particular requirement for the students of 2025–26 batch. This implies that students from this batch, who have completed their first year, will not be disqualified for promotion just because they have not acquired 28 credits out of the 44-credit requirement.

In simple words, a student who has completed his/her first year and has got 27 credits would normally be short of the 28-credit criterion. However, after the latest one-time exemption, he/she will not be disqualified on this ground.

It needs to be mentioned that this is not a blanket waiver of all examination requirements. The latest notification specifically talks about the one-time relaxation of the requirement of getting 28 credits out of 44 credits. It has also mentioned that the rest of the conditions laid down in the July 21 and September 2, 2025 notifications remain unchanged.

Thus, this also means that the latest notification does not create any new permanent promotion criterion for DU. It creates an exception for one particular batch only. Students admitted in the later batches cannot claim any exemption on the basis of this notification.

This becomes clear as the DU’s Examination Branch has posted on its website the notification titled “Passing and Promotion Criteria to the subsequent year with acquire at least 28 Credits under NEP UGCF-2022.”

Had there been any change in the rule, DU’s Examination Branch would not have listed the said notification along with the latest modification.

Have there been any Rule Modifications Before?

It needs to be pointed out that DU had introduced the 28-credits criterion through its July 21, 2025 notification. DU has adopted the 28-credits requirement following resolutions of its Academic Council and Executive Council. Its notification framework talked about the promotion to the subsequent year after acquiring at least 28 credits under NEP UGCF-2022.

Subsequently, DU modified the implementation schedule in September 2025. DU decided to apply the 28-credits criterion to the students admitted in 2025–26 instead of the 2024–25 batch.

The latest modification is another one on top of the previous ones. Whereas DU had shifted the 28-credits criterion to the 2025–26 batch, it has now exempted this batch from fulfilling this criterion. Thus, the entire series of modification goes like this: the 28-credits system was notified in July 2025, its implementation was subsequently shifted to the 2025–26 batch, and this very batch has now been exempted from fulfilling this criterion.
