GATE 2025: Top Subjects Chosen by Students in the Last 5 Years

The Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) paper has been the most-registered subject in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) over the past five years. Mechanical and Civil Engineering also remain popular choices.
As GATE registrations continue for master's, doctoral programs, and PSU recruitment, here are the top three subjects students prefer.
In 2024, 1,52,652 students registered for the CS paper, with 1,23,967 appearing. However, only 21,949 qualified. The highest score in CS was 1000, while the lowest was -96.

According to GATE 2023 data, the most number of registered students were seen in Civil Engineering. As many as 1,05,064 students registered for it. Of them 83,187 appeared and and as many as 1,57,85 made to the qualified list.

In 2022 as well, the CE paper garnered the most number of students registering for it. Of the 1,36,285 students registering for the subject, as many as 1,00,043 appeared and 17,776 qualified.

In 2021, 1,20,594 students appeared for the Mechanical Engineering (ME) GATE paper, followed by 1,15,270 for Civil Engineering (CE), and 1,01,922 for Computer Science (CS). Qualification rates were 17.38% for ME, 17.45% for CE, and 17.73% for CS.
In 2020, of 8,58,890 registered candidates, 79.76% appeared, and 18.8% qualified. Geophysics had the highest qualifying marks: 51.9 for General, 46.7 for OBC, and 34.6 for SC/ST/PwD.
IIT Roorkee will conduct GATE 2025 with 30 papers available, including aerospace, chemistry, physics, and more.
