JoSAA 2026: 4,470 B.Tech Seats Increased - More Chances at IITs, NITs & New IISc Courses

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has come up with the Seat Matrix for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session. As per the Seat Matrix available at the official site – josaa.nic.in, this time, 67,323 B.Tech seats are going to be offered by 138 institutions in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs).

This means a hike of 4,470 seats compared to last year. Therefore, if you are aspiring to secure admission to any IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTI based on your JEE Main or JEE Advanced score, then this news is for you. Moreover, IISc Bangalore, one of the topmost science colleges in India, has decided to participate in the JoSAA counselling process this year and will provide four different B.Tech programmes. The admission for these four programs will be done using JEE Advanced scores.

Currently, the registration/choice filling process has begun on josaa.nic.in. You need to complete the process till June 11. In the current academic year, there will be 18,951 seats in IITs, 25,162 seats in NITs, 11,518 seats in IIITs, and 11,692 seats in GFTIs. Thus, a total of 67,323 seats will be provided this time through JoSAA counselling 2026.

Last year, there were 18,160 seats in IITs, 24,525 seats in NITs, 9,940 seats in IIITs, and 10,228 seats in GFTIs. This brought the total number of seats at 62,853 in 128 institutes. Who Can Apply

Those candidates who have qualified in JEE Main 2026 or JEE Advanced 2026 and obtained a ranking will be allowed to participate in the counselling. If you wish to take admission to an institution like the IITs, you need to be qualified in JEE Advanced 2026.

However, your ranking in JEE Main 2026 will matter for NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. It is better if you register yourself at the official website before the last date.

Counselling to be Held in Six Rounds

The total number of rounds in JoSAA counselling will be six; that is, five regular rounds and one extra round. The registration process will continue up to June 11. The first and second mock seat allocations will occur on June 8 and June 10 respectively. On June 13, 2026, the first round of seat allocation will happen.
