NTA has introduced a significant change in the tie-breaking policy for NEET results. This policy determines which student ranks higher when two or more students have the same score. The official notification initially listed seven rules for this policy, but at the time of result declaration, NTA added an eighth rule.

New Tie-Breaking Rule Causes Uproar

The newly added eighth rule has caused a stir among candidates. According to this rule, the student who submitted their application form first is given a higher counseling rank. This gives an advantage to early applicants in the race for MBBS and BDS admissions. Candidates argue that this rule was not mentioned in the NEET information bulletin. If they had known earlier, they would have submitted their applications sooner.

Original NEET Tie-Breaking Policy in the Notification

According to the notification, if students have the same score, their rank is determined based on the following criteria:

  1. Biology Marks: The student with higher marks in Biology (Botany and Zoology) will be ranked higher.
  2. Chemistry Marks: If the Biology marks do not break the tie, the student with higher marks in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
  3. Physics Marks: If the tie persists, the student with higher marks in Physics will be ranked higher.
  4. Fewer Incorrect Answers: The student with fewer incorrect answers compared to correct answers will be ranked higher.
  5. Biology Answer Ratio: The student with a lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Biology will be ranked higher.
  6. Chemistry Answer Ratio: The student with a lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
  7. Physics Answer Ratio: The student with a lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Physics will be ranked higher.

The New Eighth Rule

NTA added an eighth rule at the time of result declaration, stating that if all the above criteria still result in a tie, the ascending order of application numbers will be used. This means the student who submitted their application first will be ranked higher. This rule, introduced with the NEET results, prioritizes the application number to break ties, benefiting those who applied earlier.

Conclusion

The introduction of this new rule has sparked debates and concerns among NEET candidates. Many feel that the lack of prior notification about this rule has put them at a disadvantage. As a result, there are calls for greater transparency and consistency in the examination and result declaration processes to ensure fairness for all candidates.
