CBSE Class 10 Curriculum 2028 Revised: AI, Data Science Added as Skill Subjects

CBSE Class 10 Curriculum 2028 Revised: AI, Data Science Added as Skill Subjects

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the examination pattern for CBSE Class 10 board examinations in 2028. Students have five compulsory subjects and a choice of one optional skill subject which might help them clear the examination if they fail in any of Mathematics, Science, or Social Science.

This clarification is applicable only to students of Class 9 for the year 2026-27, appearing for their CBSE Class 10 board examinations in 2028. This clarification is not applicable for the current Class 10 batch.

According to CBSE, the subjects 'Individuals in Society', 'Environmental Education' and the 'Modules of Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)' shall not form part of the syllabus for the above-mentioned batch of students.

In her communication to the school principals, Praggya M Singh, Director (Academics), CBSE said, "These changes have been introduced with a view to ensuring proper alignment of the introduction of the new curricular area with its implementation schedule."

"Vocational education shall continue to be a compulsory curricular area for students of Class 10 (2028 batch). To fulfill this requirement, students may opt for either the subject 'Kaushal Vikas' or any one of the 22 skill subjects notified by the board," she added.

CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2028: Five Compulsory Subjects

As per the revised pattern, students will have to appear in board examinations in the following five subjects:

  • Two Languages
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Science

But, besides these five, students will have to study nine compulsory curricular subjects. Besides these subjects, these will also include third language, art education, physical and well-being, and vocational education.

CBSE has given two options to the students to fulfill the vocational education requirement: 'Kaushal Vikas' or any one of the 22 skill subjects.

Students opting for any of the 22 skill subjects will have to appear for a board examination in their chosen subject in Class 10. The marks and grades for the examination will be included in the CBSE marksheet. In addition, students clearing the examination will also get certification under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF).

Skill subjects notified by CBSE include Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information Technology, Financial Markets, Healthcare, and Design Thinking.

"Students opting for any of the 22 skill subjects will have to appear in the board examination in the respective skill subject in Class 10 (2027-28). The marks and grades for that skill subject will be reflected in the marksheet issued by the Board, as per existing practice," said CBSE.

"NSQF certificate will also be awarded to a student for successfully passing the Board examination in the offered skill subject," it added.

On the contrary, students choosing 'Kaushal Vikas' will be evaluated internally in their schools. Students securing 33 per cent marks will get school certificate without appearing in any board examination in this subject.
