The Union government has decided not to re-conduct the NEET-UG exam, as stated in its submission to the Supreme Court. They believe that canceling the exam would "seriously jeopardize the lakhs of honest candidates" who took the test this year.
The Education Ministry admitted that there were some issues like "irregularities, cheating, impersonation, and malpractices" during the NEET-UG exam but did not mention a paper leak. They argued that without evidence of a widespread problem, it wouldn't make sense to scrap the whole exam.
The ministry's statement highlighted that canceling the exam would unfairly affect many students who took it honestly. They emphasized that any decision must consider the rights of these students as well.
This is the first time the government has clearly stated its position on holding a retest for all 24 lakh NEET-UG candidates. Previously, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had acknowledged the inconvenience caused to candidates but did not clarify the government's stance on a retest.
The Supreme Court is set to hear several petitions about the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam on May 5.
Meanwhile, the Bihar government suggested a paper leak in its report to the Education Ministry. Bihar's Economic Offences Unit (EOU) found that 68 questions out of the estimated 200 matched a burnt photocopy of the question paper, indicating that the paper was leaked before the May 5 exam.
The Jharkhand Police first alerted the Bihar Police about a potential NEET-UG paper leak on May 4. The Patna police acted quickly but initially struggled to find the suspects.
The exam was held on May 5 at 27 centers in Bihar. By the afternoon, the Shastri Nagar police station received tips that suspects were at a house in Rajbanshi Nagar. Three police teams were sent: one raided the house and found a burnt question paper; another visited a local exam center and arrested a student and his father; and the third searched for a key suspect, Yadavendu, a junior engineer.
After questioning Yadavendu, the police arrested three more students and four people involved in the leak, including Nitish and Amit. All 13 accused gave their statements to sub-inspector Tej Narayan Singh on May 5.
The Education Ministry asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the NEET-UG paper leak allegations. Bihar's EOU has handed over all its evidence and case files to the CBI.
