Passport-Size Photograph Guidelines for NEET 2026
Your photograph is one of the most important uploads. NTA has very specific rules about what’s acceptable. Here’s what you need to follow:
- The photo must be recent – taken on or after 1 January 2026. Older photos won’t be accepted.
- Your face should cover at least 80% of the frame.
- Both ears must be clearly visible.
- The background must be plain white.
- Don’t wear caps, sunglasses, or goggles (unless medically required).
- Your name and the date the photo was taken should be printed below the photo.
- Only JPG or JPEG format is accepted. File size: 10 KB to 200 KB.
- Computer-generated, edited, or morphed photos will be rejected.
Postcard-Size Photograph Requirements
Along with a passport-sized photo, you will also need to upload a postcard-sized photo. The rules are the same as for the passport photo, but the dimensions are different:
- Size: 4 x 6 inches (4.25 x 3.5 inches with 72 DPI)
- Format: JPG/JPEG
- File size: 10 KB to 200 KB
- Same photo quality and background rules as the passport-size photo
Signature Upload Guidelines for NEET 2026
Your signature is used for identity verification throughout the NEET process. Follow these rules carefully:
- Sign on plain white paper using a black ink pen.
- The signature must be in running (cursive) letters. Don’t write in capital letters.
- Make sure the signature is clear and readable – no blur or editing.
- Format: JPG/JPEG only.
- File size: 4 KB to 30 KB.
Important: Your signature on the application form must match the signature on your admit card and answer sheet. Keep it consistent.
Thumb and Finger Impression Guidelines
NTA requires scanned images of your left and right hand thumb and finger impressions. Here’s how to get them right:
- Use a black ink pad only – other colours won’t be accepted.
- The ridges of your fingerprints must be clearly visible in the scan.
- If your left thumb impression isn’t available (due to injury or disability), you can use your right thumb instead.
- Format: JPG/JPEG. File size: 10 KB to 200 KB.
Category Certificate Guidelines for NEET 2026
If you belong to a reserved category, uploading the correct certificate is essential for claiming reservation benefits during admission. Here’s what each category needs to know:
SC / ST Candidates
- Your existing SC/ST certificate remains valid and doesn’t need to be renewed.
- The certificate must be issued by a competent authority (District Magistrate, SDM, or Tehsildar).
- It should clearly mention your name, father’s name, caste, and the authority’s seal.
OBC-NCL Candidates
- A fresh OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate is required every year.
- For NEET 2026 counselling, the certificate must be issued after March 2026.
- Make sure it’s in the central government format if you’re applying for All India Quota seats.
- State-format OBC certificates are valid only for state quota seats.
EWS Candidates
- A fresh EWS certificate is needed for NEET 2026.
- The certificate must reflect the family’s income for the current financial year.
- It should be issued by a competent authority in the prescribed format.
What If You Don’t Have the Certificate Yet?
If your category certificate isn’t ready at the time of registration, you can submit a declaration form as a temporary measure. However, you’ll need to produce the actual certificate during counselling and admission verification.
| Category | Certificate Validity | Key Rule |
| SC / ST | Existing certificate is valid | No renewal needed |
| OBC-NCL | Must be issued after March 2026 | Fresh certificate required every year |
| EWS | Current financial year | Fresh certificate needed annually |
| Central Format | Valid for AIQ seats | Not applicable for state quota |
PwBD Certificate Requirements for NEET 2026
Candidates with benchmark disabilities must upload a valid PwBD certificate during registration. Here’s what you need to know:
- The certificate must be issued by a certified medical authority or government hospital.
- It should clearly mention the type and percentage of disability.
- Candidates with 40% or more disability are eligible for PwBD reservation benefits.
- Upload format: PDF. File size: 50 KB to 300 KB.
- You’ll also need to carry the original PwBD certificate on exam day.
Nationality and Citizenship Proof for NRI / OCI / Foreign Candidates
If you’re applying as an NRI, OCI, or foreign national, you’ll need to upload valid proof of citizenship during NEET 2026 registration.
Accepted documents include passport copies, citizenship certificates issued by competent authorities, or OCI documents issued by Indian or foreign government agencies. Each document must clearly show your nationality, date of issue, and the issuing authority’s details.
- Format: PDF. File size: 50 KB to 300 KB.
- Make sure all text in the document is legible and not cut off in the scan.
Domicile Certificate for NEET 2026
A domicile certificate proves that you’re a resident of a particular state. This document is important if you’re applying for state quota seats during NEET 2026 counselling.
- The certificate must be issued by the relevant state authority (usually the District Magistrate or SDM).
- It should clearly mention your name, address, and state of residence.
- Some states accept Class 10 or 12 certificates as proof of domicile – check your state’s specific requirements.
Gap Certificate for NEET 2026 – When Do You Need It?
A gap certificate explains any break in your education between completing Class 12 and appearing for NEET. You’ll need this document if:
- You took a gap year (or more) after Class 12 before attempting NEET.
- Some states and medical colleges require it during counselling or admission verification.
- It’s usually a self-declaration or an affidavit on stamp paper.
The gap certificate typically states that you didn’t engage in any criminal activity during the gap period and that you were preparing for competitive exams. Check your state’s counselling guidelines to confirm whether you’ll need one.
Medical Fitness Certificate for NEET 2026
A medical fitness certificate confirms that you’re physically fit to pursue a medical course. You won’t need this during registration, but it’s required when you report to your allotted college after counselling.
- The certificate must be issued by a registered medical practitioner or government hospital.
- It should be recent – typically issued within a few weeks of your reporting date.
- Keep it ready along with your other counselling documents.

Additional Documents Needed During NEET 2026 Counselling
Once you qualify NEET 2026, you’ll go through counselling for seat allotment. During this stage, you’ll need a few additional documents beyond what you uploaded during registration:
- NEET 2026 Scorecard / Rank Card
- Class 12 Mark Sheet and Passing Certificate (original)
- Category Certificate (fresh copy for OBC-NCL and EWS – issued after March 2026)
- Domicile Certificate
- Gap Certificate (if applicable)
- Medical Fitness Certificate
- Migration Certificate
- Allotment Letter
Always carry both originals and photocopies of every document. Some colleges ask for self-attested copies during the admission process.
Common Document Upload Mistakes to Avoid
Every year, many applications get rejected because of document errors. Here are the most common mistakes you should watch out for:
- Uploading an old photograph (taken before January 2026).
- Using a photo with a coloured background instead of white.
- Signature in capital letters instead of cursive/running letters.
- Fingerprint scan where the ridges aren’t visible.
- Wrong file format – uploading PNG instead of JPG, or JPG instead of PDF.
- File size too large or too small for the specified limits.
- Blurry or cropped scans where text or details aren’t readable.
- Using an expired or incorrect category certificate.
Take your time during the upload process. Preview each document after uploading to make sure it looks correct.
