GATE 2027 Exam Dates Out: Check Complete Schedule and New Robotics Paper

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will be conducting GATE 2027. Recently, the dates and major modifications in relation to GATE 2027 have been announced by the conducting body of GATE.

The GATE 2027 syllabus has also been modified, and a new test paper on Robotics and Automation has been introduced by IIT Madras for the upcoming year.

GATE 2027 will be conducted on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. The test will be held in two shifts per day throughout the six days of the examination.

The online application process for GATE 2027 is expected to commence in mid-August 2026. The candidates can get the updates about GATE 2027 from the official website gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

GATE 2027 Robotics and Automation Paper Introduced

One of the major changes made in GATE 2027 is that of the addition of a new paper on Robotics and Automation. The code of this new paper shall be RA.

The institute of IIT Madras has also undergone a change in terms of the paper structure for the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science paper. This current TF paper has been replaced with a sectional paper from Engineering Sciences having the code XE.

The examination of GATE 2027 would be held in the mode of a Computer Based Test and would comprise of 30 test papers in total.

The syllabus has been updated after 5 years according to academic and industrial needs.

Candidates can sit for one or two test papers. For those candidates opting for two test papers, the two papers should be selected from the combinations provided by the organizing institute.

What Is GATE?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national-level entrance exam which evaluates a candidate’s proficiency in undergraduate level topics from the fields of Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, Commerce, Arts & Humanities.

The GATE scores are used for admissions into Master’s, Direct Doctoral & Doctoral courses provided by educational institutes funded by the Ministry of Education and others.

Also, many PSUs and other organizations use the GATE scores for recruitment purposes. A large number of universities and other educational institutions use the GATE score for admissions to the postgraduate programs.

Validity of the GATE 2027 score is three years from the announcement of the results.

DigiLocker and Facial Authentication for GATE 2027 Registration

Additional security arrangements have been made by IIT Madras for the process of registration and examination of GATE 2027.

These arrangements include incorporating the online registration facility into DigiLocker and facial recognition. These are meant to enhance the process of candidate verification and ensure that the process of examination is secure.

Candidates must fulfill all the verification formalities while registering themselves.

GATE 2027: What’s New?

The syllabus of GATE has been reviewed after 5 years, taking into account the current needs of academia and industry.

Robotic and Automation is a new paper that has been added from GATE 2027 onwards.

Textile Engineering and Fiber Science paper has been made into a section paper under Engineering Sciences.

The exam will be continued to be conducted in English only.

GATE 2027 will have 30 papers to be attempted by the candidates. Students can attempt one or two papers depending on allowed paper combinations.

Facial recognition and DigiLocker will form a part of registration process.

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

There are no restrictions on the minimum or maximum age to take the GATE exam in 2027.

Applicants who have graduated from an undergraduate program in engineering technology, architecture, science, arts, or commerce are eligible to take the exam.

Those applicants who are in their final year of an eligible undergraduate program may apply for the exam.

According to the new eligibility criteria, students in the third year of their BTech program are also eligible to appear for the GATE 2027 exam.

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern

Duration of the GATE 2027 exam is expected to be 3 hours.

The Question Paper will contain 65 questions worth 100 marks.

General Aptitude will be common to all the test papers and will carry 15 marks.

Engineering Mathematics will carry 13 marks in most engineering papers. Rest marks are allotted to subject questions chosen by the candidate.

Multiple Choice Questions, Multiple Select Questions and Numerical Answer Type Questions are included in the paper.

Negative marking will be there for MCQs only.

If one mark MCQ is attempted incorrectly then one third mark is deducted whereas for two mark MCQ, two-third mark will be deducted.

There is no negative marking for MSQ and NAT.
